Location

North Shields initially but may relocate to Gateshead (possibly Birtley). Remaining flexible to all other NEFirst offices and local service points.

Main purposes of job

  • Member services regionally re credit control, which means
  • Ensuring all loan policies and procedures and credit control measures are effectively implemented.
  • Achieving successful loan repayment from credit union members issued with credit facilities
  • Making arrangements for the formal recovering of bad debts.
  • Providing transparent, timely and effective credit control and bad debt management information and reporting
  • Ensuring debt recovery is compliant with the relevant regulations and legislation
  • Member services regionally re card payments and pre-paid debit cards
  • Office administration
  • Local Service Point liaison
  • Member services locally re deposits, withdrawals

Credit control

  • Ensure all credit control records, correspondence and members’ accounts are compliant, accurate and up to date.
  • Ensure all credit control transactions are made in accordance with agreed policy.
  • Conduct regular reviews of all loan repayments and contact late payers informally and /or formally to negotiate receipt of overdue payments.
  • Instigate formal procedures with agreed agencies and authorities to recover debts from members.
  • Assist members facing difficulty in meeting loan repayments by negotiating alternative repayment schedules in line with policy.
  • Provide the Loan Officers and Credit Union Manager with regular updates on loan activity, bad debt ratios at and of loans of particular concern.
  • Make recommendations to the Loan Officers and Credit Union Manager on debt recovery, write off of bad debt, granting loans and other processes.
  • Investigate new and more effective and efficient options to improve credit control.
  • Prepare and provide accurate and timely updates and reports to the Credit Union Manager and Board.
  • Ensure that adequate provision for bad debt is made in the accounts and reported to the Board.
  • Prepare and assist with the write-off of loans and expulsion of bad debtors on a quarterly basis and as part of the annual external audit.

Pre-paid debit cards

  • Issue and service them for users

Office administration

  • Answering telephone

  • Filing and records management

Local Service Point liaison

  • Processing of LSP business (form 1s, etc)

Counter and Member services locally re deposits, withdrawals

  • Process enquiries, savings etc.
  • Scan all membership and loan applications to appropriate offices
  • Process member withdrawals requested by BACS
  • Share withdrawals from LSPs

Other duties

  • Carry out any other duties and responsibilities commensurate with the post as requested

Key results/objectives

  • Adhering to actions and timescales in credit control diary.

Responsible for staff/equipment

  • Functional management of unpaid staff

Person Specification

KNOWLEDGE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Essential: Educated to A level / OND/C or qualified through significant experience of working within a credit control environment.
  • Desirable: Studying ICM or AAT or other accounting qualification.

EXPERIENCE

  • Essential: Experience of banking, credit control or debt management for a business, charity or voluntary organisation.
  • Experience of downloading data, data manipulation using spreadsheet tools, mail merge and reconciliations
  • Desirable: Experience of working with debt collection agencies and preparing legal paperwork
  • Desirable: Experience of credit control in the Credit Union Sector.

SKILLS AND APTITUDES

  • Essential: Good PC skills, especially spreadsheets, reporting tools and database skills.
  • Ability to analyse and interpret numeric and financial information.
  • Excellent inter-personal skills to ensure effective communication with staff, suppliers/regulators and customers.
  • Good written communication skills including the ability to draft routine credit control correspondence, and a good telephone manner.
  • Strong negotiating skills.
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of sales ledger operations and basic accounting procedures.
  • The ability to prioritise work demands to meet deadlines.
  • Good organisational and administrative skills
  • Methodical and accurate with excellent attention to detail.
