Official Rules and Regulations for the Chili Cook Off for the Ames Main Street Farmers’ Market

The following rules are to be adhered to by all cook-off chair people, cooks, judges and/or assistants:

1. Chili Cook Off will be held October 7, 2017. Entries will be brought to the Information Booth at the Market between 8:45 AM and 9:15 AM. Judging will start at 9:30 AM. Winners will be announced at 11:00 AM at the east end of the Market. If you are participating in the People’s Award Cook Off you will be required to hand out samples between 9:30 and 10:30 am. Winner announced at 11:00 AM.

2. All ingredients must be pre-cooked prior to the event – chili is to be brought “ready-to-eat”

3. 2 entries per person allowed.

4. Each contestant needs to bring their recipe with them for the judges. If you are going to be in the People’s Choice you should have a list of ingredients to avoid potential allergic reactions from those tasting your chili.

5. Contestants are responsible for supplying all of their own utensils & products relating to their chili submission and maintenance of the chili’s proper temperature for serving.

6. Spoons and cups for use in serving chili to the general public will be provided. You or a representative of your choice will be the one serving your chili to the public during the public tasting.

7. Each contestant must cook a approximately four (4) quarts of competition chili, if you want to be in both the People’s Choice and Judge’s Choice. Contestants who want to only compete in the Judge’s choice are permitted to prepare only one (1) quart of competition chili, which will be submitted for judging. We have approx. between 100 and 200 visitors come to sample.

8. Each contestant will be assigned a “contestants number”

9. Each contestant is responsible for policing and cleaning up their area at the end of the day and removing all items from their area. No items shall be allowed to remain after the close of the Cook-off.

10. Contestants must abide by judges decisions.

Judging

In this competition the chili will be blind judged (no one knows the identity of the cook) and scorecards will be based on the following six characteristics

  1. Texture: The texture of the meat shall not be tough or mushy
    2. Flavor: The chili should have good flavoring and chili pepper taste (not too hot or not too mild)
    3. Consistency: Chili should be a smooth combination of meat and gravy not too thin or too thick
    4. Spice and taste: Blending of the spices and how well they have permeated the meat.
    5. Aroma: This will be a personal preference of the judge
    6. Color: The submitted chili should look appetizing

Such obligations shall not be construed to negate, abridge or otherwise reduce any other right or obligations of indemnity which would otherwise exist as to party or person described in this paragraph.
