NOVICE CORNER

CONSIDERATIONS

BY CHARLIE OXLEY

Youmay have heard some of these bridge sayings, are they true?

When their side has a fit our side usually has a fit- perhaps, but when their side has the points, does our side have the points? Still, this is a guide you can use in competitive auctions.

The 5 level belongs to the opponents- in reference to a competitive auction this may generally be true but as in all things in this game, judgment counts.

Eight ever-nine never- a rule of thumb that considers only the odds. With a nine card suit, missing the queen it is just slightly better than 52% that the queen will drop if you play ace & king. With the king out a finesse has a better chance of success than trying for a drop and the odds still favor a finesse when holding ten cards and missing the king. Just remember that there are considerations other than the odds. The opponents’ bidding, as well as their known holdings in the other suits, may well tip the scales to the opposite line of play.

Law of Symmetry (Similarities of Distribution) - when your hand is balanced other hands are usually balanced. When you hold a long suit other hands are more likely to hold a long suit. This is a fair rule of thumb and one which can help you in your play but, as in all such rules, don’t count on it too much.

Don't let them play at the 1 level- at least not unless you think they have misbid or something. You might extend this to don’t let them play at the two-level if they have found a fit.

Never double a freely bid slam- generally good advice unless you are on lead with two cashing aces against a no trump slam. You have to assume your opponents are sane and, if they have overbid, you should get a good board anyway. An exception is a Lightner double of a slam, which asks partner to make an unusual lead. Be careful here, especially with a new partner, because it asks that you not lead a suit you (or your partner) bid. This request for an “unusual” lead usually shows a void in another suit, a suit partner is not likely to lead without this double. With standard agreements doubling a no trump slam asks for a lead of dummy’s first bid suit.
