Grand Knight’s Report
Brothers,
This month, we offer a very special thanks to Joe Schopmeyer! Joe is the outgoing editor of the Carroller newsletter. For almost 10 years, Joe has faithfully kept us informed on council news and events. Joe will continue to chair the treasure chest club committee. We are blessed to have him as our brother knight. I hope he, and everyone else, enjoys our new look being unveiled this month in this special double-sized issue.
It’s great to see the enthusiasm that seems to be spreading in our council. The next couple of months offer a number of opportunities to be involved. If you haven’t been very active lately, this is a great time to do so. October is our council wide recruitment drive. I am putting the challenge out there that we recruit a minimum of one new member from each our main three parishes. Remember, our goal for the fraternal year set by the state council is 9 new members. There is no reason we cannot achieve this goal. We are doing good work as a council, but we need the assistance. Much of the work in our council falls on the shoulders of our elder brothers and their dedicated families. It is well past time the younger generation steps up to bat. We need men willing to do good work in service to their faith. All of us are dedicated to our faith. Our work in the council is just an extension of that. Invite your friends, family, and parishioners to join us. Let us show them how much good work they may do through the causes and charities we support.
Vivat, Jesus
Grand Knight Travis
A Message From Joe
The September newsletter was my last as editor of The Carroller, after nine years. My first issue was in September, 2007. I have enjoyed my time as editor but time constraints and the need for new ideas make this the time to move on. I thank you for your attention to this newsletter over the past nine years and I hope it has kept you informed of our Council activities. Thank you!
~Joe Schopmeyer
Chaplain’s Report
Dear Brother Knights:
This is my first opportunity to greet all of you since becoming Chaplain for Council #5570 in July for the 2016–2017 program year. As you may know, beginning this year, the Pastors of the parishes that support the Council will share the privilege of being Council Chaplain. Each Pastor will serve as Chaplain for a year. Perhaps, in this way, Council members will get to know these Pastors a bit better. In many ways, I feel that most of you probably know me rather well already, as I am the eldest of the group of supporting Pastors and the one with the most “seniority” as a priest. Besides being a South Bend native, I have had the privilege of serving as a deacon or priest in the parishes and high schools of the greater South Bend area for thirty-one of the past thirty-eight years. Growing up at Holy Family Parish and attending elementary school there, my diocesan assignments have included both long- and short-term “stints” at Saint Anthony de Padua, Saint Matthew Cathedral, Saint Bavo, Saint Hedwig, Our Lady of Hungary, Saint Mary of the Assumption, Saint Augustine, Saint Adalbert, and now at Corpus Christi. I also served a number of years on the faculty and staff of both Saint Joseph High School in South Bend and Marian High School in Mishawaka. On the “side”, I also assisted with celebrating Mass regularly for students at Saint Mary’s College and the Culver Academies.
My first contact with Council #5570 was during my junior year of high school, when I participated in the Knights of Columbus-sponsored oratorical contest and was introduced to John Rucano and Art Perry. (In fact, Art’s family found a picture in their family photos of Art and me after one of the contests. We both were a lot younger then!) I was honored to again represent Council #5570 my senior year.
I am happy to renew my relationship with the members of Council #5570 at this time when we face so many challenges, especially those that Catholic men face each day to live their faith and to fulfill their responsibilities as the faith leaders of their families. Our families, especially our young men and boys need the dedicated example of those who are not afraid to live their faith, to take a stand for what is right, and to lead others by their own witness and example. I see the Knights of Columbus as a great instrument for assisting Catholic men to be the best Gospel witnesses they can be.
I look forward to this year as Council Chaplain. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help the members of the Council in your efforts to be men of faith and witnesses to the Gospel.
God bless –
Father Daryl Rybicki
Family Rosary/Potluck
Our chaplain, Fr. Daryl has invited all brother knights and their families to participate in a family rosary & pot luck supper at his parish of Corpus Christi, on Sunday October 30, at 5pm. This is a wonderful opportunity to join in prayer and fellowship with your fellow knights. Father Daryl said to expect a main dish and beverages to be supplied but is asking for families interested in attending to prepare a side dish, salad, or a dessert. If you have not had a chance to welcome Father Daryl into his role as chaplain, this would be a good way.
We’d like to put together a “rough” head count so to better prepare for the evening. If you think you can join us, please contact Grand Knight Travis or the rectory office at Corpus Christi. Everyone is encouraged to attend, and consider bringing a dish to share!

October Recruitment Event & “Tootsie Roll Fundraiser”
We will be having a recruitment drive on October 23rd. We are asking brother knights to volunteer to stand outside after Mass passing out pamphlets, answering questions, and to discuss joining Knights of Columbus with interested parishioners.
We will also be collecting donations for our “Campaign for People with Intellectual Disabilities”. Many of you know this event formerly as the “Tootsie Roll Drive.” Though the name has changed, the tradition is still alive. If you are interested in helping, please contact one of your officers ASAP.
Business Meetings
Our business meetings are once a month year round. These meetings are generally 1-2 hours long. In order to decisions concerning our council, we need a minimum of 12 knights to make a quorum. After some discussion, we are going to bring back a tradition of providing a simple meal for those who attend. This might be along the lines of sloppy joes, a crock pot of chicken and noodles, or a pot of chili. Hopefully, a warm meal might inspire member knights to join in. These meetings are crucial to the running of our council and its longevity. Please show up and lend your support.
Remember, business meetings are open only to 3rd degree knights and above. If you are still a first degree knight, contact one of your officers to find out when you can take your formation degrees and join us. We also have a number of officer, and committee director, positions available. If you are interested in any of the open positions, contact your Grand Knight today. The more help we have, the more our council can accomplish. Step up and see how you can make a difference! Our next business meeting will be on October 24.
The Washington, D.C . Life March
The 8th Annual Knights of Columbus sponsored March for Life will be in January. This is a great opportunity to represent your council and your faith. For more Info contact the Indiana State Pro-Life director at (219) 663-0509.

From Our Insurance Agent
Think You Are Too Old for Coverage? Maybe Not
You are never too young or too old to consider purchasing life insurance. If you have a financial need for coverage, or will in the future, a permanent life insurance policy can be just the thing you need. When you are young and presumably healthy, coverage will be very inexpensive when compared to purchasing the same policies when you are older.
If you've put off purchasing coverage, or you realize that you may need additional insurance, the Order may still be able to help you, even if other companies cannot. In fact, in 2012, the issue age of our permanent life insurance products was extended to age 80, and in 2014, the issue age of our term insurance was extended to age 70. Naturally, your health, and whether or not you smoke, will be taken into consideration, so underwriting standards for risk and age apply. But, the extensions are a great blessing for me - and it could be for you too. Now I can help members that I couldn't help before. Are you or one of your brother knights one of those members?
Whether you're 18 or 80, the Knights of Columbus has products that will work for you and your family. I look forward to discussing coverage with you.
To learn more, please call me, Richard Lamirand, Field Agent, at 574-286-3743.
For the Good of the Order
Continue prayers for Bill Szajko in his battle with cancer. Please continue prayers for those mentioned in prior newsletters and for those brothers and their families, who may need prayers, unknown to us. If you know of a member who is in need of prayers, please call Dick Wasoski at 272-9043 so that this information can be included in the newsletter.
Knight of the Month
We are once again acknowledging our brothers and their families who dedicate their service to their faith and to the Knights of Columbus. Our Knight of the month for September was John Wirth!
The Family of the Month
Our family of the month of September was the Murawskis. Go online to our website to nominate someone for October. We will vote at the October business meeting.
Spaghetti Suppers
We express a sincere thanks to those members, ladies and students who were able to help at the September dinner. It would not be possible to have these dinners without your help.
We need sufficient help to provide the level of service that will make those who attend want to come back again. Please consider helping. Two dinners remain for 2016: October 13th & November 10th. The October dinner helps sponsor Right to Life activities in St. Joseph County.
To donate directly to St. Joe County Right to Life, please visit: Or, if you prefer, you can mail a donation to St. Joseph County Right to Life, Inc., 2004 Ironwood Circle, Suite 130, South Bend, IN 46635.
Thank you for supporting life!

Committee Positions
Below is a chart that illustrates the breakdown of committees within our council. As mentioned earlier in this newsletter, we are in need of brother knights to step forward and take on the mantle of these roles. Each group of committees has a director that oversees them, keeps track of who is working on each committee and what specific goals their committees are pursuing. Unlike officers, who oversee all aspects of the council, committees are responsible for individual programs or projects. This allows knights to focus their work within the council towards a specific area of interest. Currently, all seven director roles are open. Their first responsibility would be to work with the council officers to recruit their committees. Then they could begin working towards the charities, causes, and goals that are important to them. If you are interested in a specific committee listed, or serving as director of a group of committees, please contact your grand knight to volunteer.

K OF C LADIES
Dear Ladies,
On another warm September evening, we had seven members at our meeting. Shirley Sommer opened the meeting, and Ann Schopmeyer led us in prayer. Minutes were read by Rose Gulliforwhile Janet Paul gave ua treasurer’s report. Both were approved as read.
We talked about some of our ailing members. Mary Lee Janiak is still recovering in Indianapolis from her kidney transplant. A mass will be said for her at Holy Family Church on October 13, the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima. Both Marge Radecki and Sue Pusztaiare still recovering from surgery. We are all praying for their speedy recovery.
Shelly Mittendorfled the discussion concerning the dinners on our agenda Treasure Chest dinner that was held on September 25th. Going forward, we certainly need workers for our future dinners. On October 10th, we have clergy night scheduled. As usual, help will be needed.
Both of these dinners precede the important night of our Spaghetti Supper on October 13th.
These are busy weeks for us, and we are looking for as many members as possible to pitch in and lend a hand.
Grand Knight Travis Bruntz came to the meeting to introduce himself and discuss the future of the Council. He said one of his goals is to grow the membership of the Council. He also feels strongly that we need members to be more involved in Council activities. We thank Grand Knight Travis for his visit.
Shirley Sommer was contacted by Melissa Murawski. Melissa works for Healthy Families of St. Joseph County. The organization is a division of Family & Children’s Center. She works with moms and their families. Shirley invited her to speak at our October meeting to tell us what ways we can help the families served by her organization.
A big thank you goes to September hostesses Ann Schopmeyer and Dolores Pajakowski. The cherry dessert was delicious. October’s hostesses will be Shirley Sommer and Jackie Hoffman. See you all at our next meeting on Monday October 17th, at 6:30pm.
Sincerely,
Joan Golubski, Vice President
