Reading Skills: Cause and Effect; Monitor/Clarify

Cause- the reason something happens

Effect- something that happens

Sometimes one event can make another happen. This is the cause. It is the reason another

event, or effect happens.

Ex.- Cause- Rocky eats some cupcakes. Effect- Maria and Juan have to bake more

cupcakes.

Infer- to use clues to figure out something that is not stated directly

Sometimes readers must use clues to infer, or figure out, the causes and effects.

They must ask, “What happened?” and, “Why did it happen?”

Vocabulary Strategies: Dictionary Entry-always includes the entry word and one or more definitions, and

sometimes includes example sentences or pictures. Entry words are listed in

alphabetical order.

Guide words- words placed at the top of each page in a dictionary indicating the

first and last words on that page.

Compound Words: Two words put together to make one longer word. ex: Spelling words

Grammar: Abbreviations

Abbreviations are shortened forms of a title of a person’s name.

Titles tell if a person is a man or a woman, single or married, or what kind of job a person has.

Titles always begin with a capital letter and usually end with a period.

Ex.- Dr. Hood cares for pets.

Mrs. Grimsley teaches second grade.

Sometimes the names for days of the week and months of the year are shortened.

Ex.- The fourth Thurs. in Nov. is Thanksgiving.

Sometimes the names of places are shortened.

Ex.- I live on Willow Ave. Mia live on Cherry St.

Ave. is short for avenue and St. is short for street. * test on Friday

Why Do We Measure Weather

1. Scientists use tools to measure the weather.

2. Temperature is how hot or cold the air is at a given time.

3. A thermometer is used to measure temperature.

4. Thermometers record temperature in degrees Fahrenheit or degrees Celsius.

5. Wind is moving air.

6. Scientists use a wind vane or wind sock to determine wind direction.

7. A Beaufort Wind Scale is used to measure wind speed in miles per hour (mph).

8. Wind direction is the direction from which wind blows.

9. Wind speed is how fast or slow the wind blows.

10. Water that falls from the sky is called precipitation.

11. Rain, sleet, snow, and hail are types of precipitation.

12. Scientists use a rain gauge to find out how much rain falls.

13. A rain gauge measures in inches.

1. A community helper is someone who works to help the community.

2. Police officers are community helpers who keep neighborhoods safe.

3. Police officers make sure people follow laws.

4. Doctors help people stay healthy and help them when they are sick.

5. Dentists help make sure our teeth are healthy and clean.

6. A veterinarian is a doctor who treats animals and make sure pets are healthy.

7. Firefighters are community helpers who put out fires.

8. A paramedic is a person who takes care of people when they are sick or hurt during an accident.

9. Sanitation workers collect the garbage and help keep streets clean.

10. A teacher is a community helper who helps people learn.
