If a Locum Appointment for Training appointment is made, the training received will count towards the completion of CCT training. The Postgraduate Dean has confirmed that this programme has the required educational and staffing approval.

To practice medicine in the UK you need to hold both GMC registration and a licence to practice.

Locum Appointment for Training IN PAEDIATRIC CARDIOLOGY

Brief Description of Hospital:

The RoyalHospital for Sick Children, Yorkhill is a 306 bed unit which provides paediatric services to the Greater Glasgow Health Board are and is a tertiary referral centre for the West of Scotland. Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching is undertaken and the Glasgow University Departments of Child Health, Surgical Paediatrics, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Human Nutrition and Medical Genetics are housed within the hospital. The Trust also incorporates Community Child Health for Glasgow.

Work of the Department:

Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery form part of the Medical Directorate and share a 24 bed ward on the second floor of the hospital. Six beds in the General Intensive Care Unit are committed to Cardiac Surgery. The Department of Cardiology is well equipped for non-invasive and invasive investigation. Comprehensive cardiac ultrasound facilities are available including M-mode, 2-D. spectral and colour Doppler and transoesophageal echo. Treadmill exercise testing, 24 hour Holter monitoring, digital event monitoring and 12 lead ECG recording are routine. The Catheter Laboratory was replaced in 2007 and has digital biplane angiography replay and storage facilities. Approximately 310 catheter procedures are performed annually including diagnostic studies and interventional procedures.

Cases for elective investigation or surgery are admitted in the early part of each week and emergency cases are admitted anytime. Urgent referrals are seen in the Department and visits made the city’s special care baby units or to other wards as required. A weekly clinic caters for patients requiring long term review; a fortnightly clinic run jointly with an adult cardiologist looks after teenage patients and those with pacemakers. Each cardiologist has an outpatient clinic. Peripheral clinics are held in six towns throughout the year. Fetal ultrasound examinations are conducted weekly in collaboration with the fetal medicine specialists at the Queen Mother’s Hospital. Daily rounds of the combined medical-surgical cardiac ward and Intensive care Unit are undertaken. A conference is held weekly to discuss the management of individual cases.

Teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students is a regular commitment and special teaching courses in clinical paediatrics (2) and echocardiography (3-4) occur throughout the year.

JOB DESCRIPTION

1INTRODUCTION

The STR/locum appointment for training (LAT) post forms part of the West of Scotland Training Programme in Paediatric Cardiology, has training approval from the JCHMT and conforms to the formal training guidelines laid out in the JCHMT documents. Subject to satisfactory progress training will count towards the time required to complete any subsequently awarded CCT training scheme.

During training the Specialist Registrar is allocated a supervisor and performance assessment is on a regular basis throughout training.

The training programme is supervised by the Training Programme Director for paediatric cardiology, West of Scotland Deanery. Study leave conforms with terms and conditions of service for the Specialist Registrar grade.

2ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

The STR/LAT will be appointed by a Committee comprising representatives of the Postgraduate Dean, Speciality Training Committee, Trust, University of Glasgow and National Panel of Specialists.

Specialist Registrars must hold MRCP or equivalent and have a minimum of two years general professional training in the SHO grade.

3DUTIES OF THE POST

(i) Training

The STR/LAT must make full use of the training opportunities provided.

(ii) Clinical

The STR/LAT will be involved in all aspects of cardiology inpatient and outpatient care including management of emergency cases. Initial training in cardiology techniques would be largely in non-invasive aspects of cardiology and introduction to invasive studies, with subsequent experience being gained in invasive investigation and interventional techniques.

(iii) Administration

The STR/LAT will be expected, when appropriate, to participate in the day to day running of the department in administrative activities such as organisation of on-call rotas, organisation of undergraduate training, patient reports and letters.

(iv) Communication

This will include:

Discussion with Paediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery Consultants regarding clinical problems. Communication with General Practitioners and referring consultants including telephone discussion of problems and writing of letters about cases seen. Liaison with specialists in other hospitals/agencies, such as district nurses, ambulance, police etc.

4EDUCATION

(i) Continuing Education

The STR/LAT will be expected to participate in educational activities on a local and national basis.

In-house tutorials and locally arranged postgraduate courses are available. Specialist Registrars are expected to further their education through attendance at meetings and courses held both locally and nationally.

Local educational activities include regular audit, CME schemes, lectures, journal clubs and Unit discussions.

(ii) Teaching

Teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students and other groups would be a regular commitment.

5AUDIT

Audit

Audit is an essential component of paediatric cardiology practice and the STR/LAT will have a specific role in clinical audit and be expected to participate in local and national audit activities.

6LOCATION OF DUTIES

The initial appointment will be the combined medical-surgical cardiac ward and Department of Cardiology at the RoyalHospital for Sick Children, Yorkhill.

The banding for the RoyalHospital for Sick Children is currently Band 2b.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SERVICE

The conditions of service are those laid down and amended from time to time by the Hospital and Medical & Dental Whitley Council.

TYPE OF CONTRACT / Fixed Term
GRADE AND SALARY / STR LAT £29,705 – £46,708 per annum
New Entrants to the NHS will normally commence on the minimum point of the salary scale, (dependent on qualifications and experience). Salary is paid monthly by Bank Credit Transfer.
HOURS OF DUTY / Full time, 40 hrs
SUPERANNUATION / You have the option to join the NHS Superannuation Scheme, to participate in the State Earnings Related Pension Scheme or to take out a Personal Pension.
Employee’s contributions to the NHS Scheme are Tiered based on your earnings and the employers contribution equates to 13.5 % of salary. Employees in the NHS Scheme are “Contracted-out” of the State Earnings Related Pension Scheme and pay a lower rate of National Insurance contributions. Employees who choose to participate in the State Earnings Related Pension Scheme pay the higher rate of National Insurance contribution. A Stakeholder Pension is also available.
A Personal Pension is a private arrangement agreed with the pension provider that will be an organisation such as a Bank, Building Society or Insurance Company.
