Office of the Secretary of the Senate

Guidelines For Nomination of

Honorary Doctorates

Introduction

The Honorary Doctorate is designed to recognize extraordinary contribution to society or exceptional intellectual or artistic achievement. The awarding of honorary doctorates, an important feature of Memorial=s Convocation, serves to celebrate both the individual and the University as well as to inspire our graduates, their families and guests.

Process

Honorary degree recipients are chosen by the Senate, the University's academic governing body, after a very careful examination of the grounds for their nomination.

The selection process begins with the nomination - and anyone can nominate or be nominated for an Honorary Doctorate. If you feel you know a particular individual who is worthy of this distinction, you are invited to submit a nomination. Please use the attached Nomination Form in which you are asked to provide a rationale highlighting the contributions and accomplishments of the nominee. The nomination is then reviewed by the Senate Committee on Honorary Degrees and Ceremonial which makes recommendations to Senate. Out of respect for the dignity and reputation of nominees the selection of honorary graduates is by nature a confidential process. As a consequence, nominees are not informed they are under consideration. Apart from the public announcement by the University of Honorary Doctorate recipients for a particular Convocation, the outcome of any individual nomination is not released.
