RE :Please update attached Practicum Placement Request form for the 2016-2017 Academic Year ALERT: We are in need of more Foundation MSW placements

Earlier this year you submitted a Practicum Placement Description on STAR requesting University of Washington Social Work students for placement in the 2016-2017 academic year. We have now finished placing advanced MSW students and have been informed that we will have 120 Foundation Day students who’ve indicated they will be attending this Autumn quarter.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!! If you requested but have not received an advanced student, pleaseconsider adapting yourplacement to meet the requirements for an MSW Foundation student. We do not have enough foundation placements to offer incoming students this fall. Each year we receive about three times more requests for Advanced MSW students than for Foundation MSW students. We are encouraging agencies to be creative and flexible in structuring placements to meet the foundation requirements for micro, mezzo, and macro level practice. We will be glad to assist you in redefining your placement opportunities and writing practicum descriptions to meet foundation requirements.

We are beginning to review the questionnaires from the incoming FoundationMSW Day students and will make referrals for their Foundation placements the week of August 15. Those students will interview for placement and spend some time at their practicum sites during Autumn quarter for orientation purposes and will be onsite starting their hours two days a week by the week of November 14.This is a new change in the placement process for Foundation Practicum from prior years.

What are the key features of the Foundation curriculum?

Foundation content on Human Behavior in the Social Environment and cultural diversity are wrapped into two major practice sequences over two quarters: Micro/Mezzo Practice: Individuals, Families, Groups; Macro Practice: Organizations, Community, and Policy Practice. These sequences are offered in the Autumn and Winter quarters. Students will have a choice of one elective course Spring Quarter. Other Foundation courses include: Intellectual and Historical Foundations of Professional Practice; Social Work for Social Justice course; Poverty and Inequality; and a two-quarter Research sequence organized around an applied research project in addition to the Foundation practicum.

PLEASE COMPLETE THE BRIEF FORM BELOW IF YOU HAVE FOUNDATION STUDENT PLACEMENTS AVAILABLE TO START THIS AUTUMN QUARTER 2016.
