The Office of Health Professions Advising invites you to attend the Health Professions School Fair Meet and Greet.Meet with representatives from Medical Schools, Prehealth Masters/Postbac Programs, Physician Assistant Programs, Pharmacy Schools, Physical Therapy, Optometry and Podiatric programs, Military healthcare recruiters, as well as Test Prep Programs. •2018 Applicants: Help with writing your personal statement!

  • The Office of Health Professions Advising and the Writing Studio will offer a Personal Statement Writing Workshop Wednesday, April 5 at 6:00 p.m. in 136 Social Sciences
  • The HPA Office will be hosting two expert writing tutors from the Writing Studio, who will be reviewing your personal statements. They will be beginning to work with us toward the end of the semester. Details on how and when you can submit your statements to them will appear in an upcoming issue of the Prehealth Announcements, so stay tuned!

• Juniors, Seniors and Alums: Scheduling an advising appointment with Ms. Wahl in the Office of Health Professions Advising. Please use the AdviseStream calendar to schedule an appointment with Ms. Wahl to discuss any and all questions and concerns you may have about applying to a health professions school. Appointments are added each week, so please check the calendar on a regular basis. Don’t worry – I will be seeing students throughout the spring semester, in addition to scheduling the Reviewing My Application meetings. For students who are studying abroad/away from campus or for alums, please indicate “Skype” or “Phone” in the session note block of the appointment and send me an email “heads-up”.

NEW: Duke Undergraduate Research Society (DURS) Journal Club Meeting, Sunday March 5: You are invited to the second DURS Journal Club meeting at 3p.m. on Sunday, March 5th in the West Union Rm 216!Members will be presenting the articles on behavioral economics strategies in public health interventions and the influenza virus. NEW: Arts For Life is seeking Interns for the coming summer and fall: Dedicated, creative and caring students needed to teach the Arts to children who are faced with serious disabilities and illnesses at Duke Children's Hospital. Interns leave the experience with developed teaching skills, professional skills and a deeper understanding of what it means to serve in the hospital setting, and the nonprofit sector. PCAT Registration Opens on March 1:PCAT Testing Dates for 2017-2018 have been announced and registration for the July 2017, September 2017 and January 2018 test dates opens March 1. Check the PCAT website for details and additional information regarding the PCAT.

Public Health Graduate School Fair on March 14:The Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH) be hosting their first This Is Public Health Graduate School Fair on Tuesday, March 14 in Arlington, VA. If you will be in the DC area that week over Spring Break, check out this free event! At least 50 schools and programs of public health will be available to talk with you. This is one of ASPPH’s largest fairs, so it will be a great opportunity to speak with representatives in person. For a list of schools represented, location details, and registration info, visit:

• Health & Medical School Expo on Wednesday, March 15, 3-6 PM in Michigan Union, University of Michigan Ann Arbor Central Campus: This is a wonderful free opportunity to speak with representatives from a wide variety of health professions schools. • CMSRU Health Professions Conference on April 8: Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU) will host a health professions conference in Camden, NJ. The event, offered via CMSRU’s Pathways to Success program, is developed for undergraduate students who are hoping to pursue a professional career within health care. • CO State University School of DVM PreVet Visit Day and Open House on April 22: If you are planning to apply in the next two years, we would like to invite you to join us for an information session to learn about the admissions process, application requirements, and hear from current DVM students and faculty. This event is separate from the Open House and runs in parallel with the Open House activities. We are planning to begin the day with a private group tour of the teaching hospital, followed by a student panel with our DVM student ambassadors, an admissions overview with Dr. Gretchen Delcambre, and closing with a faculty panel. • Enhancing Diversity in Medicine, Saturday, April 1 @ Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS): The EVMS Diversity in Educational Programs will host a campus visitation day for college and graduate students interested in becoming physicians. Students will gain firsthand information on preparing for medical school, the admissions process and interviewing. In addition, medical students will provide information on the MD program at EVMS and life as medical students; and physicians will address the changes occurring in medicine, along with the rewards and challenges of practice. Special segments will focus on diversity and healthcare equity and professionalism in medicine. Students will have the opportunity to participate in interactive clinical sessions, network, and ask questions throughout the day. SPRING & SUMMER 2017 OPPORTUNITIES

• Extended Deadline:Clinical Research Internships for Summer 2017: The Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children's Medical Center (CCMC) of New York is dedicated to providing the highest levels of care in meeting the special needs of children, from premature babies to adolescents. This summer, clinical research internship opportunities are available in 7 different pediatric divisions at Cohen Children’s Medical Center (CCMC) in the NY metro area, providing students with a range of options in terms of minimum time commitment, clinical focus, and ambulatory vs. in-patient setting. The attached job description provides information about the summer internship program in each of 7 clinical areas; there is a “common application” for each internship program (see attached), though the internship programs do vary in terms of which additional supporting materials are requested. APPLICATION DEADLINE: March 6.

• Summer Research Assistant position at Johns Hopkins University:We are seeking an undergraduate Research Assistant to help execute one or more research studies that identify biomarkers for Parkinson disease. Successful applicants will be personable, detail oriented, well organized, and dedicated to helping patients with diverse needs. The undergraduate Research Assistant will work under the supervision of the Principal Investigator and Study Coordinators to help prepare for and conduct research study visits. Prospective applicants must demonstrate excellent time management skills by effectively prioritizing and working on multiple tasks with concurrent deadlines. •Journal of Young Investigators Accepting Exec Board Applications: The Journal of Young Investigators (JYI) is an independent, non-profit, peer-reviewed, online science journal that is managed entirely by and for undergraduate students from across the world. • Valley Health Clinical Research Summer Internship (Winchester, VA): The Valley Health Clinical Research Department Student Intern Program is designed to introduce college, pre-med, incoming junior and senior level students to the medical research environment. The program will include concepts and applications of clinical research, basic scientific principles, clinical outcomes, data collection and management, and medical education. • NEW: Two research positions with Dr. Monty Hughes, Duke Urology/Surgery: The focus of Dr. Hughes’ lab is to define the mechanisms driving inflammation in the bladder ( He is recruiting 2 rising seniors for the lab who can receive credit for independent study and would be expected to work both fall and spring semesters (≈8 hours/week). This opportunity is particularly beneficial for senior pre-health students. Students will independently perform experiments with training and oversight from senior investigators. • NEW: Research position with Dr. Karen Baker, Duke Urology: Dr. Baker’s research focuses on the etiologies and treatment of male factor infertility.She is recruiting 1 senior student who can receive credit for independent study for a project requiring approximately 8 hours/week for the fall and spring semesters. This is a great project for a student who desires publication and is interested in surgery, urology, endocrinology, or OB/GYN. This laboratory-based project involves direct contact with experimental rodents. • NEW: Position at the Duke Center for Macular Diseases: This position for a Research Technician is open in the Department of Ophthalmology at Duke University, working with clinician-scientists in the Duke Center for Macular Diseases. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of vision loss in people over 55.This research includes NIH-, foundation grant- and industry-funded research in dry and wet AMD, with a specific focus on understanding the role of inflammatory cells in AMD. The technician will be involved in focused studies for imaging of postmortem eyes (high-resolution MRI, two-photon imaging, optical coherence tomography, photoacustic imaging) and flow cytometry analysis of inflammatory cells of interest, monocytes and macrophages from patient volunteers (i.e. human research subjects) with AMD. This work will involve processing and preparation of cell and tissue samples from patients. Prior applied research experience is preferred but not required. Specific experience with imaging methods and flow cytometry methods is not required. Knowledge of good laboratory and good clinical practices is desirable but not required, but the successful applicant must be willing to learn and apply these practices. The successful applicant will have a strong educational foundation in the biological sciences (especially cell and molecular biology) and will be motivated, hard-working, have excellent critical thinking skills, embrace and understand safety and compliance protocols, and work well with others, including collaborating research scientists, clinical research coordinators, and supervising faculty investigators. In addition to the specific focus on flow cytometry, this technician position may assist other research scientists on other projects, learning and applying additional techniques such as cell/tissue culture, RNA isolation and RT-PCR, protein extraction, Western blot, and ELISA.
