WEDNESDAY CLUB MERIT SCHOLARSHIP

The Wednesday Club sponsors a scholarship that is awarded yearly to a GWHS graduate.

Eligibility:The student must:

  • Be a GWHS graduate
  • Have excelled academically
  • Planning to pursue a bachelor’s degree from a college or university

Award amount:$1,000

WOODROW WILSON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP

The Woodrow Wilson Elementary School Student Scholarship is sponsored for students who attended Woodrow Wilson Elementary School through fifth grade.

Eligibility:The applicant must:

  • Be a GWHS senior graduating May 2012
  • Have attended Woodrow Wilson Elementary School from first through grade five
  • Have a GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Must be attending a 2 or 4 year institution fall 2012

Award Amount:$500.00

Deadline:Applications and supporting documents must be received by the Woodrow

Wilson Scholarship Committee by Friday April 20, 2012.

URW COMMUNITY FEDERAL CREDIT UNION SCHOLARSHIP

Eligibility:The student must be:

  • A graduating Senior
  • Entering an accredited college, university or other recognized institution of higher learning
  • Member of the URW Community Federal Credit Union before June 1, 2011

Award Amount:$500.00

How to Apply:Applications are located in the scholarship file in Guidance.

Deadline:Applications and supporting documents are due to the URW Community Federal

by 5:00pm on April 13, 2012.

GRANVILLE P. MEADE SCHOLARSHIP

The Granville P. Meade Scholarship provides financial assistance to students who have achieved academically, but who are financially unable to attend college. This scholarship provides awards to seniors to attend one of Virginia’s public or private colleges or universities.

Eligibility:The applicant must:

  • Be a graduating senior
  • Upon graduation attend a Virginia public or private public university or college
  • Have financial need
  • Have demonstrated academic achievement

Award Amount:$2,000 per year renewable for four years

Deadline:March 1, 2012 - Completed applications with all supporting documents are due to Ms. McKinnie in the Guidance and Counseling Office.

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE DAN RIVER REGION SCHOLARSHIPS(Guidance Selected)

Complete a Local Universal Scholarship Application (LUSA) foreach scholarship of interest and return to Ms. McKinnie in the Guidance and Counseling Office by February 20, 2012.

  • John R. and Betty B. Eggleston Scholarship Margaret Spruce Floyd Scholarship –for qualified graduates in Danville, Pittsylvania or Caswell County
  • John B. Grubb Scholarship – for Danville and Pittsylvania County Public School graduates
  • Stuart Harris Drama Scholarship – for outstanding dramastudents
  • Irene L.Pritchett Memorial Scholarship – for qualified black graduates from the Danvilleand Pittsylvania County
  • Spiro Skenderis Memorial Scholarship – for students who have overcome a hardship
  • Eileen and Joseph Stendig Scholarship – for deserving students with financial need

How to Apply: Complete a Local Universal Scholarship Application found in the Guidance and Counseling scholarship file. Write the name of the scholarship on the appropriate section of the LUSA and return to Ms.McKinnie. Please be aware that in additional to the LUSA you must provide a transcript and letter of recommendation for each scholarship. In the scholarship file for the Community Foundation guidance-selected scholarship, you will find a Demonstration of Financial Need form. Immediately forward the completed form to all colleges in consideration.

Deadline:February 20, 2012 – Applications are due to Ms. McKinnie February 20, 2012.

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE DAN RIVER REGION SCHOLARSHIPS(Student Selected)

  • James W. Bryant, Sr. and James T. Collie Scholarship – for Pittsylvania County Public school graduates, prefer students pursuing education or nursing
  • John Watson Daniel Scholarship – for graduates in Danville, Pittsylvania, or Caswell County. Eligible students who are descendants of employees or retirees of John W. Daniel Construction Company may receive priority consideration
  • Danville Regional Medical Center Auxiliary/Volunteers Scholarship – for Danville Regional Medical Center employees, volunteers, and their immediate families
  • GW Class of 1957 Scholarship – for graduating seniors of George Washington High School.
  • Roy L. and Mary G. Doss Scholarship – for graduating seniors of Danville or Pittsylvania County
  • Gantsoudes Scholarship Fund – for graduating seniors of George Washington High School attending college in North Carolina or Virginia
  • Roy G. and Joan F. Gignac Scholarship Fund – for graduating seniors pursuing technical fields of study, preferably attending the Illinois Institute of Technology
  • Ray M. Harris Scholarship – forgraduates of public and private schools in Danville or Pittsylvania County
  • Main Street United Methodist Church Scholarship – for local seminary students, with a preference for United Methodist applicants
  • Robert and Bernice Milam – for active members (or students whose parents or legal guardians are active members of Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church
  • Arnold B. Porter & Elizabeth J. Porter Scholarship – for members of Fairview United Methodist Church who demonstrate a reasonable need for financial aid
  • Alger Pugh Memorial Scholarship – for GW High School athletes, with a preference given to football players
  • Percy and Velna Scearce Scholarship – for graduates in Danville, Pittsylvania or Caswell, who actively support their religious convictions, are merited and have financial need
  • Louise P. Surles – for students attending the University of Virginia
  • Andy Warren Memorial Scholarship – for GW athletes, with a preference given to football players

How to Apply: Complete “The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region 2012 Scholarship Application” located in the scholarship filein Guidance or at The last page of the application must be completed and sent in advance to each college beingconsidered. Students are to return the completed application to the address listed on the application no later than March 6.

STAN PARKER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – ROANOKE VALLEY WRESTLING ASSOCIATION

The RoanokeValley Wrestling Association awards an annual scholarship in memory of Stan Parker.

Eligibility:The applicant must:

  • Be a senior from the Blue Ridge, River Ridge, ThreeRivers, Pioneer, Piedmont, WesternValley or one of the independent schools of Roanoke Catholic or North Cross
  • Attend a junior college, state or private college, or university
  • Be active in wrestling and student activities or the son or daughter of a coach, official, or someone involved in the wrestling community
  • Have maintained a “C” average

Award Amount:$1,000.00
