By the time you are reading this – the first summer bar-be-que at Gouldsboro UMC is over.

June is the month of weddings, schools are finishing up their year of classes and the weather begins getting hot and dryer. Church attendance begins to dwindle as summer vacations, picnics and outings take place of weekend activities.

I would like to remind everyone that the bills of the church continue every week whether you are here or not. If you are going on vacation or a weekend excursion – think of your church offering and put it in your envelope and send it, bring it before going or remember to bring it when you return. It can be very challenging to be a church treasurer during the summer vacation time. We have an ongoing history of providing our treasurer with enough funds to keep the bills at bay most all the time. THANK YOU for your generosity and commitment.

June is also a time of clergy moving and relocating. To my knowledge, I am not moving and I am not relocating. YEAH !!!! I am completing my second year here at Gouldsboro and Thornhurst UMC’s. I have been blessed with two amazing congregations who have taught me to not be so independent and to allow someone else to carry the load for a time. I am very grateful for my appointment here and hoping that it will continue for many years to come.

I encourage each person of the churches to look toward the future and consider prayerfully what and how we are called to be Christ’s church within our communities. The future has not yet been written and therefore there is not “we never did it like that before” that applies to our future ministries. If you are aware of a need and have an idea of how to provide for it, please let me know, let others in the church know and just do it !!!

The summer heat continues to bring challenges with my health. We all know how easily I sweat even in the winter temps and the heat makes that even worse – but now I am realizing that with the heat comes nauseousness, something I never experienced in my life before. Bear with me as I work out how to best combat this newest symptom.

Have a great summer – take time to enjoy the weather and remember that no weather lasts long in northeast Pa.

Love you,

Pastor Peg

Gouldsboro UMC Trustees are investigating the possibility of purchasing an automatic external defibrillator (AED) to be placed in the church. I thought this would be a good opportunity to explain what an AED is, when it is used, what it does, and how it works.

An AED is a portable device that is used when a sudden cardiac arrest occurs. An AED has easy-to-follow visual and audible instructions. The device has clear instructions on where to attach the device to the chest. Once attached the AED monitors the heart rhythm and determines whether a shock is needed. If needed, you are prompted to stay away from the patient and deliver the shock at the appropriate location on the chest. It will not deliver a shock, if it is not needed.

An AED is considered an addition to traditional cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and not a substitute. The AED checks for specific heart rhythms called ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation. The ventricle is the chamber of the heart that forces blood into the overall circulation of the body. Tachycardia means that the heart is beating too rapidly. Fibrillation means that the heart muscle is just “quivering” and cannot pump in one coordinated force to get the blood pumped to the body. And so, even though the heart has some motion, it cannot pump the blood, and so is ineffective. The AED provides the shock needed to stop the “quivering” and resume a normal heart pumping. Not all cardiac arrests result from this type of change in the heart rhythm. Defibrillation, for other types of abnormal cardiac rhythms or just a total stopping of the heart, does nothing.

The reason that AED’s have become so important, in addition to CPR, is that it has been found that “For every minute that a person in cardiac arrest must wait to be defibrillated, their chance of survival decreases by 10%. After ten minutes, the chances of survival are less than 10%.” (Carrico, 2003, p. 17).

As we consider purchasing an AED, we will also need to work with our local EMS and plan for CPR and AED training for members of our faith community. There are four key steps in promoting survival during cardiac arrest. First is to recognize an emergency, including heart attack, cardiac arrest, stroke and choking; and call 911. Second, is to begin CPR to a person in cardiac or respiratory arrest. CPR keeps oxygenated blood flowing to the brain and heart. Third, is use of an AED to treat ventricular fibrillation. Fourth, is early advanced care from trained paramedics who can give cardiac drugs and insert breathing tubes. As part of this process, an AED has the potential to save lives of both young and old.

The Lord’s Laughter

“The One whose throne is in heaven sits laughing.” Psalm 2:4

Mischievous organists who tickle churchgoers

A recent church research survey indicated that many church organists have a mischievous sense of humor and occasionally play pranks on congregations or exact subtle revenge on clergy who displease them.

Half of 2,000 churchgoers polled by Christian Research said they had noticed an organist slipping unexpected, playful tunes into services, reported Joyful Newsletter consulting editor Rev. Dr. Karl R. Kraft of Dover, DE.

Tactics included slipping snippets of heavy metal classics, advertising jingles, and even nursery rhymes into hymns and anthems.

For instance, an organist in Scotland who had a falling out with his church’s clergy retaliated by inserting a rendition of “Send in the Clowns” as the clergy processed in for a Sunday service.
