February 8 - Pete Keegan introduced the speaker for the evening; Archie Follweiler, Jr. Follweiler was accompanied by his wife Virginia Grim. He currently serves on the Kutztown Borough Council and is seeking the 187th Legislative seat in the Pa. General Assembly by opposing incumbent State Representative Paul Semmel in the November elections. Mr. Follweiler is from the Kempton area and has worked in the oil industry in Kansas and is currently in the real estate field, working at Monaghan Realtors, Kutztown.
Follweiler began by speaking about the recent Pa. Renewable Energy & Sustainable Living Festival held in Sept. 2005. The event was held at the Kempton Community Center and was sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Renewable Energy Assn. The Festival concentrated on disseminating information relative to resource and fuel conservation, the use of non-petroleum renewable fuels, recycling, and the use of biodegradable products. The Festival is to be an annual event.
Mr. Follweiler then spoke about his political aspirations. He cited the “less-than-above-board” and possibly unconstitutionality of the pay raise foisted upon us by the Pa. Legislature last year; a pay raise voted for by Rep. Semmel. Follweiler stated that ethics do matter and he took Rep. Semmel to task for not sharing his views on the property tax issue and his indifference to the Leaser Lake project. According to Follweiler, Rep. Semmel has lost touched with his constituency. More information on Follweiler’s election bid may be found at archiepahouse.org/index.shtml.
February 15 - This evening we celebrated Valentine’s Day with wives, husbands and friends. After dinner, we were entertained by the nine-member, plus accompaniment, KU Gospel Choir. Guests included Fleetwood Rotarian Janet Peters; Adam Bauer, one of our KU Rotaract members, and Nicole Radziewicz, the Rotaract’s contestant in the KU beauty pageant
February 22 - Jim Springer introduced his guest, Keith Snyder. Michael Hutnik is the new Rotaract representative from Lambda Chi Alpha at KU.
The speaker for the evening was Rotarian John Cusatis. John’s theme was “Plan B” or have a contingency plan. Whether it is in your business or in your personal life one should always be prepared for circumstances or events that are not anticipated. In business, you should plan to have you computers and you data ‘backed’ up. In your home you should have an evacuation plan in case of fire or other catastrophic events that might occur.
These plans, if they exist, should be reviewed and updated periodically. Plans should be detailed and easy to put into action. The plan may be a simple evacuation plan for your family to an elaborate in the event of a terrorist attack. Automobiles should have a ‘kit’ that includes at a minimum a first aid kit, a blanket and a small quantity of water and perhaps some condensed food. Individuals should also consider being trained in CPR or taking basic first aid courses.
