Occasional Papers and Working Papers

The Centre for Small States Studies (CSSS) will normally seek to publish up to two occasional papers and four working papers each year.
All papers will normally be available both in hard copy and online.
Guidelines to Authors
All initial communications/enquiries regarding possible papers should be directed to an Editorial Board member. In broad terms, the Editorial Board members have assumed responsibility for papers as follows:
- Papers focusing primarily on Scandinavian/Nordic studies: Annica Kronsell and Lee Miles.
- Papers focusing primarily on Mediterranean states and the relationship of small states with and in the EU: Neill Nugent.
- Papers that are primarily concerned with relating small states' studies to wider international relations studies: Annica Kronsell.
- Papers containing a significant focus on gender studies: Annica Kronsell and Iver B. Neuman.
- Papers focusing onsmall states and European security: Anders Wivel and Iver B. Neuman.
- Papers focusing on conceptual and theoretical issues concerning small states: Lee Miles and Anders Wivel.
- Papers focusing on historical aspects of small state development: Richard Griffiths.
- Papers focusing on small states and economics: Richard Griffiths.
- Papers not falling in any of the above 'categories': Clive Archer.
Occasional papers
These should normally be 7,000-8,000 words in length and be completed pieces of work. They will be fully refereed - that is, be read and approved by at least one member of the Editorial Board and by two outside referees acting anonymously.
Working papers
These should normally be 5,000-6,000 words in length and may be based on work in progress. They will be lightly refereed - that is be read and approved by at least one member of the Editorial Board and by one outside referee acting anonymously. Authors will be able to use further versions of their papers for publication elsewhere.
Formatting of occasional and working papers
1) All papers must open with an abstract of about 150 words.
2) Endnotes, not footnotes, must be used.
3) References in the text should be in Harvard style, as follows:
…..and was signed in 1999 (Smith, 2001: 45).
4) Endnotes should be as follows:

Submission of papers
1) When draft papers are being submitted, three hard copies and an email attachment copy must be sent to the appropriate member of the Editorial Board and one hard copy should be sent to the chair of the Board.
2) Once a paper has been accepted for publication, three hard copies and an email attachment copy must be sent to both the relevant editor and to the chair of the Editorial Board.
Both draft and final versions of papers should be typed, double spaced, on A4 paper, and indicate on the cover page the number of words and the number of any figures/tables/diagrams.
Authors' copies
The principal or sole author of all papers will be sent ten complimentary hard copies of the paper.
