APPENDICES
Table S1. ΔAICc for each statistical model in relation to the best fit model (ΔAICc=0). The statistical models consider nectar presence, pollinator size and plant growth form as explanatory variables and the proportion of time that ants spent on the treatment side of the Petri dish as dependent variable. For each statistical model we applied three evolutionary models -- Brownian, Pagel and Ornstein-Uhlenbeck. The three most parsimonious models are marked with bold.

Table S2
Observations of weaver ants on plants in bloom. The table indicates whether plants produce ant repellents, whether ants patrolled plants and flowers, the flowers visitors we observed and the reaction of ants towards flower visitors. In the flower visitors and ant response columns, cells are left empty when we observed neither flower visitors nor ants at flowers respectively. In the response column NBV indicates that bees did not visit ant-habouring flowers (although they visited flowers of the same plant)
