Y7 lesson
Objective: to build on SUBJECT PRONOUN knowledge by introducing and practising avoir
Lesson
- Usual start up ritual (uniform, rubbish sit register while they do a starter – probable reading subject pronoun lists etc)
- Objective setting – establishing (in English) that the subject pronouns are not much use without a VERB – select avoir as useful in relation to our current learning
- illustrate how verb changes in English (with gestures to reinforce our kinaesthetic methodology)
- bring in the French bit by bit:
- j’ai
tu as
with perhaps simple repetition and volume (they start with just movement in response to my prompt to ensure familiarity with pronunciation so move onto saying it accurately,
show written form before moving on to...
- il a, elle a, on a
perhaps with clapping to play with different rhythms,
bring in written form and recap (including pairwork & English to French) before moving on to
- nous avons, vous avez
perhaps with card prompt with only the word nous or vous on it,
perhaps with subject pronoun prompt cards to go on desks for pairwork,
bring in written form before move onto ...
- ils ont, elles ont
perhaps initially get class to listen and show which line of verb they are hearing (ie 1-9) by holding up the relevant number of fingers as a way of ensuring that they hear the correct pronunciation and associate it with the spelling – could develop this by me just saying the verb and they have to come up with all the possibilities for that sound.
- consolidation by getting them to speak/gesticulate verb in different styles
eg d’une mannière aggressive / timide / énergique / fatitiguée / élégante / silencieuse / pas silencieuse (this helps to justify the actions) class to pair to demonstrations – and / or to get them to practise by using a dice as trigger.
- to familiar tunes – firstly ‘read song’ silently, ie through movements only – no sound – secondly, in pairs to work out how to sing the various ‘songs’ – they will have to think about the rhythm, pronunciation and tune!!!
- make up own
- Recap – in English? – and if time establish that what we need now is to put the subject pronoun + verb with a noun, if there is time this would provide the opportunity to link with previous learning through very simple mime for whole class guessing / pair work guessing
- Consolidation – writing out the verb in ex books – and setting homework – to teach someone the verb! (reference in vocab book)
