Lesson 8 - (Metas p. 185-187)

Objective: writing! Students will also carry on a short debate.

Materials: blank overhead transparencies and pens

Warm-up: All stand! Students must use gustar/encantar etc. + one vocab word to form a question. One person starts and asks the question while the rest of the students have to raise their hand when they have an answer. After answering the student must then ask his or her question to another…once the student has answered/asked he or she may sit down (This activity uses vocab and grammar from the chapter in a quick review!) (6-8 min)

Activities:

1. Tell students that you are going to continue to talk about gustos and their lives! Put them in groups of 3 and give each group a blank overhead and a pen. They must first chat about university life – what are the stressful parts and what does each person like to do to alleviate stress? Next students need to write one paragraph on the overhead transparency that describes the group’s perspective. (10-15 min)

2. Have all groups take turns going to the overhead with their transparency and reading out loud their paragraphs. This is an easy and effective way to start to correct their errors with a different colored pen. Students can point out things or you can quickly do it in front of the class so that everyone benefits! (Since all groups are being corrected this is usually a good way to do it – they don’t feel singled out. I like to tell them that it is very good to make mistakes at this point because not only are they helping themselves, but all can benefit!) (15-20 min)

3. (Say something like “Still talking about stress- let’s think about a different aspect of life – technology!”) Organize a short debate using p. 186 Paso B. The last sentence on the page is the prompt, so have student read it and take a minute or so to prepare. Then divide the class into 2 (those who agree and those who disagree) and one person starts by expressing his opinion. Interject with questions when students need more prompting, but encourage both sides to continue with good arguments. (Remind students about participation before doing this activity.) (10-15 min)

Again as students leave encourage them to find a balance between school/studying and fun/relaxation! Tell them that next class they will be beginning a new section of the text.
