Synopsis of Homily for O.T. XXXIISunday (Nov 8)on Jn 2: 13-22

Video homily by Fr. Grimm:

> Features > Liturgical Reflections

Introduction: The central theme of today’s readings is the warning that, as baptized Christians, we are the temples of God where the Spirit of God, the real Source of all spiritual blessings, dwells and that we should not desecrate the temple of God by sin. We have to keep our parishChurch holy and fully dedicated to Divine worship and keep our hearts, as temples of the Holy Spirit, cleansed, just, holy and pure.

Historical background: Today we celebrate the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome (the Pope’s cathedral- the mother of all the churches in the city and in the world – and their head), on 9th November 324 AD by Pope St. Sylvester. Every Bishop has a cathedral and the Pope’s cathedral is the Basilica of St. Johns Lateran, not the Basilica of St. Peter.Scripture lessons:The first and second readings today remind us to make Jesus the foundation stone and cornerstone of our lives because, if we do, there is a life-giving river flowing from him that will fill us with his grace. In today’s first reading, Ezekiel prophesies to the exiles in Babylon that the restored Temple of God will be a source of God’s blessings for them when they return to Jerusalem. In Ezekiel’s vision, the Temple will produce a stream growing into a river that will make the land fertile. We can see this vision as a picture of the Church receiving life-giving grace from Jesus. In the second reading Paul reminds the Corinthians that they are the temples of God built on the foundation of Jesus and that the Holy Spirit dwells in them. Today’s Gospel gives the dramatic account of Jesus' cleansing the Temple of Jerusalem by driving out its merchants and money-changers, followed by His prediction of His own death and Resurrection.

Life messages: 1) We need to avoid the business mentality of loss and profit in Divine worship. Our relationship with God must be that of a child to his parent, with no thought of loss or gain, but only of mutual love, respect and the common good. Hence, fulfilling one’s Sunday obligation only out of fear of mortal sin and consequent eternal punishment (hence a loss), is a non-Christian approach. 2) We need to remember that we are the temples of the Holy Spirit: St. Paul reminds us that we are God’s temples because the Spirit of God dwells in us. Hence, he warns the Corinthians and us that we have to keep our bodies pure and our souls holy. 3) We need to love our parishChurch and use it. Our parishChurch is the place where we come together as a community to thank, praise and worship God after asking His pardon and forgiveness for our sins and failures. It is the holy place where we gather to offer our lives, our needs and our petitions before God and where we obtain Divine strength by receiving Jesus in Holy Communion. Let us make our Church an even more holy place by adding our prayers and songs to community worship and by offering our time and talents in the various ministries.

What is a parish and its role in Christian life? The parish is in many ways the most visible, local and immediate expression of the Church. According to Canon Law, a parish is a stable community of the faithful within a particular church (i.e. a diocese), entrusted by the bishop to the pastoral care of a parish priest, with the cooperation of other priests, deacons and laity. - _ftn25#_ftn25 However, since every parish is linked to the universal Church through the bishop and his bond of hierarchical communion with the Pope. - _ftn26#_ftn26The “beating heart” of parish life is the Sunday celebration of the Eucharist, which is “the source and summit of the whole Christian life.” - _ftn28#_ftn28The parish is also the place where children and adults are initiated into the life of the Church through Baptism, and where sinners receive the Lord’s mercy and forgiveness in Reconciliation. Every parish is sanctified by the presence of the reserved Blessed Sacrament. Another central function of the parish is the proclamation of the Gospel to believers and non-believers. It is the duty of all the faithful by virtue of their baptism. It is exercised in a special way by parents, catechists and teachers as well as by priests and deacons. Finally, the parish community should be characterised by the life of charity expressed in good works and fraternal love. - _ftn30#_ftn30Ultimately the parish is an authentic Christian community because of the presence of Christ within it. The pastor sacramentally re-presents Christ the Head and Shepherd. - _ftn32#_ftn32 And so while other members of the community are called to genuine collaboration in the mission and life of the parish, the ministry of the priest is indispensable and irreplaceable.
