“Nyeehmyagyin” (EQUAL) Community-Based Legal Program

About NyeeHmyaGyin:
“NyeeHmyaGyin” (EQUAL) Community-Based Legal Program is an exciting new initiative of Female sex workers (FSW) and funded by USAID. In order to address present legal challenges to the national HIV response among female sex workers (FSW) have come together to form a multi-level program to facilitate access to justice and human rights for their communities. In this program, lawyers and peer paralegals will give health, human rights and legal education to the target populations. The project focuses on advocacy on justice issues, policy change and law reform. With funding from the USAID, EQUAL will extend existing programs to include legal literacy, awareness, legal aid, policy change and law reform, especially for FSW in Yangon, Bago Region and Mon State.
Requirements:
1. Advocate
2. Must have over 5 years working experience continuously in practicing lawyer field
3. Recent litigation experience in Myanmar and ability to work in district, high court and supreme court of the Union of Myanmar
4. Ability to build networks with judiciary, law makers and civil society
5. Knowledge of principles of advocacy in law and in development
6. Must have strong trainer skills
7. Computer literate
8. Good knowledge of community-based paralegals and principles of legal aid
9. Excellent knowledge of relevant areas of Myanmar and international law
10. Excellent communication skills, ability to communicate complex issues in plain language. Ability to communicate community issues to law-makers.
11. Commitment to the protection of the rights of female sex workers and domestic violence
12. Experience in community education preferred
13. Commitment to the principles of community management
14. Fluent in Myanmar, excellent English spoken and written
Duties:
1. Provide supervision to paralegals in giving basic legal advice, researching and preparing cases
2. Provide legal education to paralegals, other stakeholders
3. Provide representation in court
4. Conduct community workshops and trainings
5. Conduct mediation for legal and other disputes
6. Support documentation of cases for future advocacy
7. Work with stakeholders to develop SIL strategy
8. Build a network of lawyers and other institutional support
9. Other duties as directed
