Number of children in care

·  There were 133 children in care in March 2011, 12% above the March 2010 total. This climbed to 148 in June 2011 (an 11% increase since March), but has since decreased to 142 by September 2011.

·  The number of children in care during 2010/11 remained higher than the March 2010 figure throughout 2010/11. This pattern has so far been repeated in the first half of 2011/12, with the number in care remaining higher than the March 2011 figure.

Placement Types

·  The chart shows that for the first half of 2011/12, Poole was the provider of 71% of children in care placement nights in 2010/11 (down from 79% the previous year). The second largest provider was the private sector at 16%.

Placement Stability – number of moves

·  14 (10.5%) of the 133 children in care at 31st March 2011 had been in 3 or more placements since 1st April 2010. At the end of September, this had decreased: 13 (9%) of the 142 children in care at 30th September 2011 had been in 3 or more placements since 1st October 2010.

Placement Stability – length of placement

·  27 (66%) of 41 children in care for at least 2.5 years at 31st March 2011 had been in the same placement for at least 2 years. This is a decrease from 70% in 2009/10, and has dropped below the figure for England in the previous year (68%). The figure for September 2011 has continued the drop, down to 60%.

·  When looked at on a by child basis, of the 130 children due reviews, 117 had all reviews on time.

·  This gives a percentage of 90% for children having all their reviews on time in the last 6 months.

Adoptions – percentage adopted

·  In the first half of 2011/12, 2 children were adopted from care (giving a percentage of 7%), compared with 10 in 2010/11, and 3 in 2009/10.

Adoptions – timescales

·  Poole has excelled at this measure, with performance steady at 100% since 2008-09, well above the comparator figures, which are all below 75%.

Children in care information is sourced from a combination of an Access database and Raise. All other Poole information for 2007/8 to 2011/12 is from Raise. Carefirst was used as the main client database until Raise was launched on 2nd October 2006. Following this change, some data has been recorded differently and this has affected some statistics. Information gained from Raise is only as accurate as that input onto it.

Comparative data is obtained from OfSTED’s Data Analysis Tool and DfE statistical releases.
