Now Hiring: In-House Legal Counsel

Grassroots Campaigns, Inc (GCI) is a political consulting firm that specializes in running face-to-face mobilization campaigns (via paid door-to-door and on-the-street canvasses and volunteer-based organizing efforts) for the Democratic Party and its candidates, and progressive advocacy groups. By running campaigns on behalf of groups such as the National Democratic Party, MoveOn.org, the American Civil Liberties Union, and Amnesty International. GCI builds themembership, financial, and volunteer bases for these organizations and advances their ability to create change. GCI also runs field campaigns for candidates and other organizations to mobilize citizen support for progressive causes at the local, state, and national level and encourage citizens to be actively engage in politics.

Legal Counsel is responsible for providing legal advice and action related to the management of our 30 campaign field offices across the country. The in-house counsel works with our senior management team and department heads and reports directly to the Vice President of Operations.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Compliance: Reviewing of internal procedures for compliance with state and federal law regarding employment and solicitation. Advising and coaching directing team to proactively avoid disputes.
  • Litigation: Handling all disputes and legal matters, with supervision,to which Grassroots Campaign is a party
  • Canvassing and Solicitation Registrations:Securing permits, maintaining state registrations and developing corresponding materials to comply with state and local charitable and political canvassing laws.
  • Coordination with Local Counsel: Working with local counsel in states where Grassroots Campaigns is party to a case.
  • Legal Support: Providing legal support to our administration and payroll departments.
  • Contracts: The drafting of and review of client contracts.

Qualifications:

Strong communication skills, work ethic, and desire for progressive political change are essential. Candidates must have an interest in public interest law and/or activism. Strong self-direction and the ability to take initiative are also necessary qualifications. An ability to work efficiently and handle numerous diverse tasks concurrently is essential.
