Not a good pennant season

DOUBLE Bay Men’s Bowling Club had a “disappointing” season in the 2011 Zone 11 pennant competition, which was completed with Round 10 matches played on Saturday, May 14.

All, but the Grade 6 team, will most likely finish lower in the pennant standings than last year.

The Grade 1 side, which last year was runner-up to Alexandria Erskineville, this season dropped to third spot with a collection of 30½ points, three less than 2010.

Best performed side was in Grade 6, which is in second place in the Section 2 contest with 28 points compared with 15½ last year last year when it escaped relegation because a club failed to complete its matches.

With most clubs having two of their 10 matches washed out (rounds 3 and 7) Zone 11 officials are expected to decide which, if any, matches need to be played to decide grade or section winners and relegation candidates.

Some grades expected to play washed out games

TWO Double Bay teams are expected to complete their 2011 Zone 11 Pennant commitments on Saturday (May 23) when they play the Round 7 matches washed out on April 16.

The club’s chairman of selectors, Gerald Weinberg, said on Monday that he expects the grade 2 and grade 3 teams to be playing the washed out games listed in Round 7.

He does not anticipate that Zone 11 will call on Double Bay teams from grades 1, 5 and 6 to play the washed out fixtures.

Grade 2’s commitment is away at Matraville; the Grade 3 (section 2) team is away at Bronte.

A count of points collected by Double Bay’s five pennant teams up to last Saturday shows that all, but the Grade 6 team, could finish on a lower rung than last year.

The Grade 1 slipped from second to third; the Grade 2 side can move up to third place, which will be equal to last year’s placing, if it beats Matraville and table-toppers Greenlees defeats the current third team Clovelly,.

Grade 3, currently in fifth place, but safe from relegation, will have to take all the points on Saturday from second placed Bronte to equal last year’s fourth line finish, but much will depend on the outcome of the clash between third and fourth teams, Coogee and South Coogee.

Grade 5 is in fourth place, compared with second spot last year.

IN last Saturday’s Round 10 games Grade 1 side went down 1-5 (51-65) at home to the Pennant Champions, Alexandria Erskineville.

The lone rink win (19-14) came from Ray Jankelowitz along with brother Harold, Les Lilian and Brandon Conway. The loss pushed the team down to finish third with 30½ points as Kensington collected 4½ points from its match against Greenlees for a 34½ total.

The Grade 2 team came back from Clovelly with a 4½- 1½ (69-57) win as the Julian Engelman team (Sid Glick, Mark Sack and Arnold Javen) drew 22-22 and the Sol Caganoff side (Jonathan Chapman, Sam Abrahams and Rob Hutchins) scored a significant 27-11 tally.

In Grade 3 away against Matraville, Double Bay finished ahead 5-1 (81-53) as Sam Brick skipped Gerald Raichman, Harry Stein and Ivor Cohen in a match-winning performance of a 32 margin at 45-13. Paul Brandon led his team of Hylton Bloch, Phil Michael and Len Sandler to a 18-13 result.

Grade 5 at home found Bronte too good in a 1½-4 ½ (56-61) loss, although Neville New, David Carroll, Paul Isenberg and skip Len Simon won 27-13 and the rink headed by Eric Wainstein (Ray Novis, Ken Shapiro, Abe Cohen) squared the result at 19-all.

Grade 6 completed its season on a disappointing note with a ½ -5½ (50-67) defeat at South Juniors, but still retained second place in Section 2.

The best rink was from Cedric Amoils’ side of Sam Terley, Harry Jacobs and Mark Reisin which collected the half point after a 23-23 result.

Nine-out-of-ten for club in District Pairs championship

FOR the ninth time in the last decade, Double Bay Women’s Bowling Club has taken out the Eastern Suburbs District Pairs tile.

This year it was a familiar all-Double Bay final when Gail Black and Marie Thatcher defeated Jan Hutchins and Barbara Shotland by an extra end’s single shot 22-21 on Friday, May 16.

Earlier, three Double Bay pairs contested the semi-finals where Hutchins and Shotland, (who teamed with Jenny Welton to win last year’s event) overcame the challenge from 2009 champions, Iris Kampel and Juliette Friedlander, 22-13, while Black and Thatcher got home, 24-20, against Matraville’s J. Vella and L Ross.

The win continued the consistent performance by the improving Gail Black, who, so far this season, has been a part of the club’s Major Pairs and the District Fours-winning teams.

The District Pairs final at Double Bay was a nail biting affair from the start as terrific bowls were delivered by all four players.

Neither combination was able to gain control. On the 14th end the score was tied and then again at the 18th end it was all-square at 17 all.

Two ends later Black and Thatcher hit the from with a four-shot collect, only for Hutchings and Shotland to reduce the tally by one on the 20th then three shots on the regulation 21st last end to again level the score at 21-21.

On the extra end Black and Hutchins produced excellent lead shots, but it was Black, who laid the foundation for the title with top-draw bowling which produced the winning edge.

Throughout the match all four players put down accurate bowls including a number of conversion shots by Thatcher and Shotland which kept their teams within touch of the spoils.

Double Bay Women’s Club has a remarkable record in the Easter Suburbs District Pairs. In 2009 the Iris Kampel-Juliette Friedlander combination won the event for the third time, while the 2008 title went to Rayna Rosenberg and Jenny Welton.

A TEAM from Double Bay Women’s Bowling Club will compete for the State Fours Championship later this year.

The side of Marie Thatcher, Pat Bryant, Barbara Shotland and Lorraine McLaughlin proved that Friday 13th is agood luck daywhen they brushed aside the challenge by a combination from Ramsgate26-16 to book a place in the State FoursChampionshipat Tuncurry on October 8.

Double Bay won the right to represent the Eastern Suburbs District when its team of Thatcher, Bryant, McLaughlin and skip Jenny Welton defeated club mates Rayna Rosenberg, Karen Levinson, Lorraine Stafford and Sandra Ballard in the final in February.

The Group playoffs were played in gusty conditions at the Sutherland Bowling Club last week where top clubs Taren Point and Ramsgate fought out the first encounter on Thursday with the winner then having to play Double Bay for a spot in the StatePlayoffs.

In a very tight gameRamsgate won by 2 shots and were quietly confident of winningagainst Double Bay.

Double Bay called in Barbara Shotland to substitute for the unavailable Jenny Welton and the combination had all the answers to almost every bowl put down by the Ramsgate contingent.

From thefirst end the team combined well and got off the mark with a three-shot collect. The score evened out until 10th end when Double Bay picked up five shots and raced ahead to a healthy lead as the eastern suburbs representatives handled the crosswind far better than their opponents.

On the 16th end Double Bay held six shots when a brilliant delivery from the Ramsgate skip reduced the count. On the following two ends Ramsgate made a late challenge, but the Double Bay unit rallied to add four shots on 19th end which set the seal on the result. The match was declared over on the 20th end at 26-16.

Jenny Welton will return to skip the team at the State Fours title in October.
