Northwest Youth Corps – Community Conservation Corps

Northwest Youth Corps is offering apaid job training program in Eugeneand Hillsboro, Oregon called the Community Conservation Corps.There are 8 positions still open for the Eugene Cascade Fuels Crew starting April 6th, and 6 positions remain open for the Hillsboro Crew that starts April 1st.

The Community Conservation Corps (CCC) program offers professional development and training for young adults aged 18 to 24, who are out of school and out of work one month prior to beginning the program, AND receiving or eligible to receive (or anyone in the household) public assistance in the month prior to enrolling in the CCC program. Participants earn industry recognized certifications while working on conservation, recreation, and park maintenance projects.

The focus of the Community Conservation Corps program is training and real world job readiness. Members will spend about 25% of their time in formal trainings and 75% of their time completing resource and park management projects. Trainings will include Wilderness First Aid, Trail Construction and Maintenance, Chainsawing, and Resource Restoration. Additional trainings may include fire fuels reduction, Community Emergency Response Teams, and Herbicide Application.

The majority of projects will take place Monday through Friday. Projects may include fire fuel reduction (chainsaw and slash piling), trail building and maintenance, natural area restoration.

Dates and Locations

CCC Cascade Fuels Crew (Eugene): April 6th -Aug 28th, 2015

Almost all projects will be spike based (camping) with very occasional in-town (non-camping) weeks. Crew works a Monday through Friday schedule. Crew will primarily be completing thinning (Chainsaw) projects in the Willamette National Forest.

CCC Hillsboro: April 1st -Aug 28th, 2015

This crew will spend their term assisting the City of Hillsboro in maintaining and restoring wetlands and natural spaces. Projects on this crew will include invasive species removal, debris and trash removal, and native species monitoring with the possibility of other related projects. There may be 1-2 weeks of camping required during crew trainings.

CCC Eugene 2: June 22nd – November 20th, 2015 (tentative dates)

Most weeks will be in-town (non-camping) with some spike projects (camping). Most projects will focus on either park maintenance or restoration projects in the Eugene-Springfield area. Generally the schedule will be Monday through Friday with occasional over weekends.

Hours and Compensation

AmeriCorps Members work a minimum of 900 hours over a 5 month period. Food is not provided for this program, but AmeriCorps Members may be eligible for food assistance services. Members earn a monthly living allowance of $1,210. Members are eligible for an educational award of $2,865 once their program has concluded and they have completed 900 hours of service.
