2. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE UNDER 25 DOUBLE RINK versus NORFOLK
What a great day for the Northamptonshire Indoor Bowling Association’s Under 25 Double Rink team, on Sunday, 12th February, 2017, at the neutral venue of St Neots & District IBC, in the National Quarter Finals of the Under 25 Inter County Double Rink competition against Norfolk.
Norfolk is a bit of a nemesis to the County, but on this occasion, in a tremendous match, our young men proceeded into the Semi-Finals with a victory by 6 shots. This was an absorbing match throughout with Norfolk taking the early initiative by a 4 shots lead after 3 ends played by 1 rink and 1 end by the other, with David Walker’s rink being 1-7 shots adrift, and Connor Cinato’s rink 2-0 shots to the good. However, at this stage the Walker rink dug in deep and with some excellent bowling over the next 4 ends, scored 14 shots to none conceded, and this welcome change of fortune included a massive count of 6 shots, and they then lead 15-7 shots.
-2-
At this point in the match the Cinato rink was trailing by a couple of ends played due to 2 ends being ‘killed’ but they had added to their tally and had a useful lead at 4-2 shots. This decent lead of 10 shots for the County was not going to last for the Norfolk team had the very experienced Segolo brothers as the skips, and a junior England international Dan Seabourne in their company, and so it proved. 4 ends later for the Walker rink Norfolk had reduced the County lead to just 4 shots at 16-12 shots, and although still behind in ends played due to more ‘killed ends’, the Cinato rink, at the same point in time, had not been able to maintain its lead and the score on that rink was 11 shots each.
The last third of this 18 ends contest was very interesting indeed, for whereas the Walker rink looked reasonably comfortable at 17-13 shots up, the 14th end saw Norfolk take a count of 4 shots to level their rink score, and on the Cinato rink a collection of 5 shots without reply saw Norfolk go into a 1 shot lead, much to the concern of the Northants officers and supporters. They need not have worried about the Walker rink’s progress, however, for they won all 4 of the last ends to take a victory by 6 shots, but as the Cinato rink was still a couple of ends behind their colleagues, everyone became a little alarmed on the Northants side, as the Cinato rink played its penultimate end.
David Iddles put one of his lead bowls fairly tight in front of the jack, but the Norfolk players had placed all of their bowls just behind, and with a superb delivery the Norfolk No. 3 lodged onto the Iddles’ bowl, nudged the jack to his own back bowls, and when Connor Cinato went to bowl his first bowl he was sitting 5 shots down. Connor fired very heavily with his 1st wood but unfortunately missed the target, and his opponent calmly drew another shot to be holding a definite 6 shots, and possibly a 7th on a measure, so Connor was faced with a possibility of losing the match for the County if his last bowl should fail. Connor did not hesitate to use weight again and this time he hit his target perfectly and everyone on the Northants side cheered the result as the Norfolk bowls were sprayed out of the head, for he ended up dropping just 2 shots on that end to relinquish the slender 1 shot lead that he had, by 1shot. That gave him and his rink much confidence as they played their last end, in which they picked up 1 shot to draw.
Final score was Northamptonshire Under 25’s 38 shots – Norfolk Under 25’s 32 shots. Rink scores, Northants names first, as follows:
Rink 1. David Iddles, Conor Bryan, Danny Walker & Connor Cinato 15 shots – Aaron Johnson, Ben Hunter, Dan Cawthorne & Tom Segolo 15 shots
Rink 2. Curtis Johnson, Will Walker, Adam Pitfield & David Walker 23 shots – Aaron Stimson, Dan Mills, Dan Seabourne & James Segolo 17 shots
This win puts the County against Lincolnshire in the Semi-Final, to be played on the 12th March, 2017, at a venue to be determined.
