Welcome to the BITA program! This career technical education (CTE) class teaches skills and qualities needed to succeed in the home and commercial construction field. I will be using a variety of instructional methods including projects, group activities, lecture and discussion that integrate both Common Core academic and CTE standards.

In this course, students will learn skills needed for residential carpentry construction. Focus is on the logical progression of the home-building process, from framing to finish. The course includes safety, use of tools, materials, design codes, blueprint reading, and material estimating.

As part of instruction, this course reinforces skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and mathematics and requires their application in workplace situations. Integrated throughout the course are career preparation standards, which include communication, ethics, interpersonal/team skills, critical thinking and problem solving, safety, technology, and other employment skills. Students are given opportunities to demonstrate personal qualities, including responsibility, self-confidence, and self-management.

Students’ grades are based on classroom participation, projects and assessments. All assignments are based on competencies related to skills needed for success in the workplace. Grades are based on the following scale:

A100% - 90%=Very successful

B89% - 80%=Successful

C79% -70%=Somewhat successful

D69% - 60%=Not yet successful

F59% - below =Redirect

Roofing
  • Identify various roof coverings, including roll, wood and composite shingles, clay and concrete tiles, as well as various metal roofing materials.

  • Understand and use roof materials schedules.
  • Identify typical sheet metal shapes used in residential roofing applications.
  • Calculate material needs by the square as well as linear footage.
  • Identify the tools specific to roofing trade, and select appropriate tool for materials at hand.
