Position Title: Associate Dean for Agricultural Research

Department/Program Overview:

The School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences is one of eight schools/colleges at North Carolina A&T State University. The mission of the School is to provide opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds to achieve excellence in the food, agricultural, family and environmental sciences through exemplary and integrative instruction, and through scholarly, creative and effective research and Extension programs. Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

The Associate Dean for Research is expected to provide visionary leadership and strategic management to foster excellence in the operations, productivity, and continued improvement for the Agricultural Research Program. Leadership and management responsibilities include the following: developing and implementing research priorities in consultation with departmental chairpersons, engaging in strategic planning, coordinating proposal development and preparation with appropriate departmental chairpersons or principal investigators, coordinating plans of work and budget preparation, and managing human and financial resources. The Associate Dean for Research must demonstrate the ability to work cooperatively and positively with students, faculty, staff and other university administrators with varied backgrounds, experiences, and disciplines. In addition, the successful candidate would be expected to build alliances with business, government, foundations, and cultural entities that lead to increased resources for the University and enhancing its collaborative and partnership efforts.

Qualifications:

The candidate for this position should have:

§  an advanced degree (PhD or equivalent) in the agricultural, family and environmental sciences or related academic discipline

§  at least five years of exceptional leadership and management experience

§  possess a distinguished record of scholarly accomplishments in a collaborative interdisciplinary environment

§  demonstrated successful administrative experience in a land grant university, preferably with a research organization.

§  a record of success at a level that is tenurable in an academic unit at a land grant institution

§  demonstrated successful experience developing and managing large budgets including blended funding streams and entrepreneurial funding sources

§  demonstrated successful experience in working with governmental and legislative leadership in the development of funding proposals

§  a proven record of accomplishments as an educational leader, scholar, and administrator including a successful record of leading people, leading change, building teams and coalitions, and building consensus

§  demonstrated excellence in working with boards and constituency groups

§  demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing

§  demonstrated ability to articulate a clear vision, motivate others to join in the vision, and to lead in the planning and execution of the steps required to achieve the vision
