Non-Communicating Loop Scheme with Commonwealth Edison
Customer:ComEd / Product Type:Overhead ReclosersLocation:Illinois / G&W Products:Viper-ST
Market Segment:Investor Owned Utility / Automation Scheme:Non-communicating Loop Scheme
G&W has worked hard to assist ComEd with their Smart Grid initiatives. It began in 2011 with ComEd piloting G&W’s Viper-ST Reclosers in a Non-communicating loop scheme. As part of the preparation for this deployment, G&W trained over 300 ComEd employees on the operation of the Viper-ST recloser and SEL-651R2 relay. The automation pilot went live in the spring of 2012 and ComEd continues to install Viper-ST reclosers on their system.
The next phase of ComEd’s Smart Grid initiatives includes single phase trip and lockout FLISR (Fault Location, Isolation, and Service Restoration). G&W Viper-ST’s are already capable of this and all previously installed Viper-STs on ComEd’s system can be utilized for this updated scheme.G&W and ComEd have presented their solution at industry conferences and in trade articles.
Non-communicating Loop Scheme and FLISR at Duke Energy
Customer:Duke Energy / Product Type:OverheadReclosers Underground SwitchesLocation:North Carolina / G&W Products:Viper-ST and Trident with SafeVu
Market Segment:Investor Owned Utility / Automation Scheme:Non-communicating Loop Scheme
G&W has worked with Duke Energy on multiple phases of their automation project. G&W was first involved in an overhead, non-communicating loop scheme project using Viper-STs with SEL 651Rs in a heavily forested area that inhibited radio communication. This project was commissioned in the fall of 2012.
Due to the success of this project, Duke asked G&W to participate in their Downtown Raleigh project to bring FLISR protection to the area, utilizing G&W Trident with SafeVu solid dielectric switches and SEL-451 relays with IEC61850 GOOSE communication protocol in fully submersible control cabinets. This project is scheduled to be commissioned in the spring of 2017.
Main-Tie-Main with SF6 Insulated Switches at Cornell University
Customer:Cornell University / Product Type:Underground Padmount SwitchesLocation:New York / G&W Products:SF6 Insulated Padmount Switch (PNI)
Market Segment:College Campus / Automation Scheme:Main-Tie-Main (MTM)
Cornell approached G&W to provide a solution to protect power distribution from their generation stations back in 2015. G&W worked with Cornell and their consultants to develop a Main-Tie-Main solution utilizing G&W’s “Best-in-Class” Lazer solution consisting of SF6 insulated Padmount switches (PNIstyle) with ABB REC670 and REF615 relays and IEC61850 GOOSE communication protocol.
The project was commissioned in the summer of 2016. G&W automation engineers were onsite to train Cornell staff and their consultants on the use of the G&W switches and ABB relays. Cornell was so pleased with this solution, that they have added it to their list of standards.
Integrated Substation FLISR at Fresno State
Customer:Fresno State University / Product Type:Underground Padmount SwitchesLocation:California / G&W Products:SF6 Insulated Padmount Switch (PNI)
Market Segment: College Campus / Automation Scheme:FLISR
P2S, consultants for Fresno State’s Building Management group contacted G&W, in search of creating an automation protection solution for their campus. G&W developed a custom FLISR program and HMI for integration into the Building Management’s existing system to protect theirentire campus. G&W used its “Best-in-Class” LaZer solution consisting of ABB REC670 relays in PNI padmounted switches, ABB REF615 relays in ABB metalclad switchgear and an ABB RTU560 HMI with IEC61850 GOOSE communication protocol.
The project was commissioned in the summer of 2016 and Fresno State was very pleased with the solution provided. Fresno State has included this into their list of standard solutions to apply in the future. Fresno State and G&Whave co-presented this solution at industry conferences.
FLISR Protection for the Locks of Saint Lawrence Seaway
Customer:Saint Lawrence Seaway / Product Type:Underground Padmount SwitchesLocation:Canada / G&W Products:SF6 Insulated Three-position Switches
Market Segment:Government / Automation Scheme:FLISR withNon-communicating Loop Scheme
The Canadian Government department who manages the locks of Saint Lawrence Seaway were looking for an improved way to manage the power needed to operate the locks. G&W aided them by providing a FLISR solution with a backup non-communicating loop scheme. The solution utilized G&W SF6 Insulated Switches(TNI Style), SEL-451 relays and IEC61850 GOOSE communication protocol.
The project was commissioned in the Spring of 2016. The Saint Lawrence Seaway is pleased with the solution and has co-presented this solution with G&W at the January 2017 EDIST conference in Canada.
Super Store Automatic Transfer Scheme at Chocktaw Electric Cooperative
Customer:Chocktaw Electric Cooperative / Product Type:Overhead ReclosersLocation:Oklahoma / G&W Products:Viper-ST
Market Segment: Public Power / Automation Scheme:Automatic Transfer Scheme
Chocktaw Electric Cooperative’s largest customer is the WalMart SuperCenter in town. The store was experiencing some intermittent loss of power and asked Chocktaw Electric for help. Chocktaw sought the help of G&W Electric to provide an Automatic Transfer Scheme specifically for Walmart’s feeders.
The solution Chocktaw and G&W implemented was two Viper-ST reclosers with SEL-651R relays with custom Loss of Voltage (LOV) and Automatic transfer Schemes.
