Search and Secure Procedure
Introduction
This procedure is to be used to secure the NLCTA PPS enclosure (henceforth referred to as “the enclosure”). Securing the enclosure consists of verifying that no one is inside the enclosure, verifying the integrity of the exclusion barriers, and ensuring that all doors are securely latched. This procedure must be repeated whenever there is a loss of PPS security in the enclosure.
The enclosure contains the injector, the chicane, the linac, and the spectrometer. This procedure starts from the condition in which the enclosure is open.
Applicability
A complete search of the enclosure requires a team of at least two qualified operators: one person at the PPS console in the NLCTA control room, and a another to conduct the search. If so desired by the search team, a third person (not necessarily a qualified operator) may be used to assist in the search. All people participating in the search and secure process should familiarize themselves with this procedure prior to carrying it out.
Precautions and Limitations
Searching must be done thoroughly to ensure that every person anywhere in the enclosure will be found.
If the integrity of the PPS interlocks or other safety systems has been compromised prior to the search, then the “PPS Interlock Checklist,” must be completed.
Each member of the search team entering the enclosure must have a key from the East Entry Key Bank during the search.
The person at the PPS console must not release any keybank keys other than those carried by the search team.
Prerequisite Actions
1.Read this entire search procedure before proceeding.
2.If necessary, refer to the “Entry and Exit Procedures” (02-03-02).
3.Get the Search Reset Key from the key safe.
4.The PPS operator sets the enclosure to CONTROLLED access.
Searching the Enclosure
1.The searcher(s) enter into the enclosure via the East Entry Module as specified in the “Entry and Exit Procedures.”
2.The searcher(s) continue all the way through the enclosure to the West Entry Module (outer) PPS door. Make sure the West PPS door is latched.
3.Search the west maze by sweeping the area from the West Entry Module (outer) PPS door to the gun. Make sure to close the (inner) PPS gate behind you. Include the cable trays in the search. Obtain the west search preset with the Search Reset Key.
4.Search the length of the enclosure from the gun to the entrance to the East Entry Module maze, paying special attention to the back side of the beam line and tops of cable trays.
5.Search the spectrometer/dump area, while taking care to ensure that no one enters the linac area from the east maze, which has not yet been secured. (The second searcher, if present, may be used to monitor the east maze while the spectrometer/dump area is being searched.) Obtain the east search preset with the Search Reset Key.
6.Both searchers search through the east maze to the East Entry Module (outer) PPS door. Close the (inner) PPS gate.
7.Both searchers exit the enclosure as specified in the “Entry and Exit Procedure,” returning their keys to the key bank. Make sure the East PPS door is latched.
8.After completing the keybank, the searcher, using the Search Reset Key, and the PPS console operator, together obtain a “search reset.”
- Return the search key to the NLCTA control room. This concludes the enclosure search and secure procedure.
