NHS Bath & North East Somerset and NHS Wiltshire cluster announces Chair

The Appointments Commission has officially appointed Tony Barron as Chairman of the Boards for the PCT cluster of NHS Bath & North East Somerset and NHS Wiltshire. Tony’s appointment will run from 1 April 2012 until March 2013.

The Boardswill lead the PCT Cluster in its crucial role of supporting the development of the new clinical commissioning groups (CCGs), whilst ensuring people in Bath & North East Somerset (B&NES) and Wiltshire can continue to access high quality health care services.

The following people have been appointed to the NHS B&NES and NHS Wiltshire Boardsas Non-Executive Directors:

David Smith, David Loosley, Christine Reid, Lis Woods, John Holden, Peter Lucas and David Stevens.

Ed Macalister-Smith, Chief Executive for NHS B&NES and NHS Wiltshire cluster said:

“As we move to the next phase of NHS reforms I’m delighted that we have astrong, highly experienced and capableteam. Alongside our GPs, local authorities and voluntary sector partners we will ensure patient safety and quality remains at the top of our agenda”.

Tony Barron said:

“This is a challenging time for the NHS but we are very fortunate to have high calibre Non-Executive Directors across B&NES and Wiltshire who will continue to work with us to ensure the best possible National Health Service for our patients, staff and public”.

Tony Barron’s appointment has been made in accordance with the Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments Code of Practice. He will receive a remuneration of £36,779 per annum.

All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity (if any declared) to be made public. Tony Barron ended his position as a Political Agent for Romsey on the 31 December 2007. He also previously worked as a Non-Executive Director for the South Central Strategic Health Authority. He was appointed Chairman of NHS Wiltshire in December 2006.

A Quantity Surveyor by background, Tony Barron was also a fully qualified fixed wing and helicopter pilot. His interest in aviation stems from his teenage years when he won an RAF flying scholarship on leaving school in Sandbach. He went on to have a highly successful business career, spending five years as Managing Director of the Seymour Group of construction and engineering companies and working as an industry trouble shooter in Africa and the Middle East for an American group of companies. He also has a long history in local politics, health, local environment and charitable sector having a stood as a UKand European parliamentary candidate for the Liberal Democrats. His health background stretches back to the mid 1980s and is extensive, having served as a Non-Executive Chairman of Hampshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust, a Non-Executive Director of the former Basingstoke District Health Authority and was also a member of a local Community Health Council. He also served as a Hampshire County Councillor, Chairing the Education Committee, and chaired a number of charitable trusts.
