GUIDANCE NOTES FOR LOCAL AUTHORITIES/REGISTERED PROVIDERS

NHAS Mortgage Debt Advice forms part of a DCLG funded service under the NHAS contract to help households at risk of lender repossession. The funding is split between Shelter and Citizens Advice. Shelter’s role is to provide mortgage debt advice to Local Authorities and Registered Providers.

To access NHAS Mortgage Debt Advice please complete the referral form as fully as possible and return to us via email/fax or post. You will receive confirmation that your referral has been received within 2 working days.

In order for Shelter to provide you with a quality service and ensure a quick turn around on cases it is essential that you complete the referral form with as much detail as possible. If you would like to discuss a case prior to referral please contact the service, using the telephone number above.

What we can do:

For Local Authorities:

•A full money advice and welfare benefits check

•Explore lender hardship options

•Negotiate with lenders to stop or delay possession action

•Make applications to court to suspend and/or vary court orders

•Advice on other options open to homeowners, including SMI, MRS, Assisted Voluntary Sale, securing other accommodation

Where Mortgage Rescue may be suitable our team of advisers can assist with MRS eligibility decisions by carrying out assessments of financial eligibility for the scheme
