Hatchmen / I think that there should never be a compromise on Safety at any time. It is safety in the work place to save lives. In the mining sector they have spotters. Main Road works also.
How many more workers must die? Construction etc.
My personal view the Code of Practice should preserve the role of the Hatchman. It is very important as they are the eyes for the crane operator when he cannot see, to identify and eliminate hazards that are not visible.
Example of this: snagged twist locks or poor cargo presentation etc

Stevedoring qualifications / Should the guidance material refer to the qualifications that have been developed for stevedores? I believe the new code should include/refer to Certified Stevedoring Cert, II, III & VI for all workers This training is important for all aspects of Stevedoring, Safety Included. I believe that all should be trained by the employers. Max Popovic
Safety Induction skill-set / Should the newly developed stevedoring safety skill-set be used to underpin safety inductions? I think Safety Inductions are important to all, so that all workers are aware of their work place areas any potential hazards etc. The safety induction units should be included in the Induction of ALL new starters. Adding to this the Code, should spell out that certain safety /induction units must be covered. Max Popovicc
Use of checklists / Should the safety checklists, which set out examples of the types of hazards, and acceptable/unacceptable ways of handling those hazards, be maintained in the guidance material?
My strong view is that the Specific Waterfont Checklists, which list the hazards we face everyday plus listing acceptable & unacceptable ways of handling those hazards should be maintained and not watered down.
