‘Eli’s Reach’

of a miracle

LAFAYETTE, La. – Was it truly a miracle that delivered 3-year-old Eli Judice from a life-threatening medical problem on Easter Sunday of 2011?

His dad believes so, and he explains why in a newly published book titled Eli’s Reach: On the Value of Human Life and the Power of Prayer.

The book, by Chad Judice of Lafayette, La., is the sequel to Waiting for Eli: A Father’s Journey from Fear to Faith. His first book features a thoroughly captivating story whose central character, Eli, was born with a dreaded birth defect called spina bifida. The second book is the continuing saga of this special-needs child and the influence his story has had on many who have read it or heard about it otherwise.

Eli’s Reach describes how the boy’s story has touched the hearts and rekindled the dormant faith of many, including men, drawing them into a life with more room for God and family.

The new book also shows how Eli’s story has brought many to a keener appreciation of the value of all human life, including the lives of the most vulnerable among us. It recounts stories of two women who, after reading Waiting for Eli, chose to reject abortion and bring their unborn babies to term.

The miracle referred to in the book involves Eli’s deliverance from a life-threatening medical situation prior to a scheduled surgery at a New Orleans hospital on Easter Sunday of 2011. A cyst in Eli’s brain was causing a malfunction in the shunt that facilitates the proper flow of neural fluids between the brain and the spinal cord. Two surgeries had been done on the previous day and a third was scheduled for Easter Sunday. But after long periods of heartfelt prayer by the author and his family, Eli’s cyst was reduced in size by 75 percent overnight – much to the surprise of the attending surgeon – thus relieving the pressure in the brain and rendering the third surgery unnecessary. The surgeon had figured the cyst would be reduced over a period of time – weeks or a few months – but certainly not in a matter of hours or minutes.

Thus, the question: Was Eli the beneficiary of divine intervention?

Published by Acadian House Publishing of Lafayette, La., the 160-page hardcover book is available through bookstores and gift shops nationwide.
