1.College & Career Information

The Workforce Investment Board of Ventura County invites you to investigate good paying jobs and what it takes to get into health, tech-based manufacturing or green jobs. Check out Workforce Investment Board or stop in the CCC for a flyer with more information.

College ROTC Scholarships – Sophomores and Juniors who are interested in ROTC scholarships for college should visit the CCC for more information on requirements and eligibility standards. It is not too early to think about ROTC College Scholarships!

Apprenticeship, Career College, Technical School or Vocational Training – If you are not planning on attending a traditional college right out of high school, consider focusing on career with a specialty college or school.

Apprenticeship – Cal Apprenticeship has information on California Apprenticeship programs.

Career College or Technical Schools – check out the US Department of Education’s website for information on choosing the best school for your career goals.

Vocational Training – Conejo Valley Adult Education, Simi Valley Adult Education, Ventura Adult and Continuing Education,orNorth Valley Occupational Center. 2.ACT/SAT/PSAT Test Schedule for 2014/15

The ACT and SAT tests are scheduled by the respective boards and not by CVUSD or TOHS. Students must register and pay for the tests online, not at TOHS. Please review the test schedules to best determine which test you should register for. Be aware of deadlines! Both ACT and SAT will charge extra for late registration.

Free SAT practice and video tutorials through Khan Academy.

Enhanced Fee-waiver Services – Registration with a fee waiver is now allowed through the late registration period.

Fee-waiver users will receive college application fee-waiver forms directly from the College Board.

3.How to Navigate from High School to College

Figuring out what college to go to, how to get there and planning out the road map to the perfect school and career is not a quick or easy process.

Check out The College App Map website, funded by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, shows you step by step how to plan for college beginning freshman year. But what if you’re a sophomore, junior or senior? It’s still not too late. You CAN get to college!

Also, check out This is a fun website for a public television show that has been called “inspiring.” The show travels the US, listening to the life stories of famous and everyday people, how they got to where they are now. It can help students discover what career path they want to follow.

You can also check out a student recommended website to research what real students and parents are saying about colleges. Find out where student ranks colleges in academics, athletics, campus dining, housing, drug safety, transportation, weather and much more.

Gap Year opportunities are another way students investigate what they want to do in life. Students with the entrepreneurial spirit might want to investigate the Un-College program. Students can network and experience a year of self-discover, while developing their own curriculum. The program is broken up into four 3-month sessions that include internships, travel abroad, living in a Gap Year house and completing a creative project. Visit Gap Year to find out more.

Northern Arizona University – NEW! Blue & Gold Scholarship Program can save qualifying students $8-12,000. These scholarships can be added to the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) discount for out of state students. Deadline is May 1.

Marist College – Technology Scholarship Program (Full Tuition, room & board!) Deadline is February 1st.

USC Norman Topping Scholarship – for students applying to USC. Deadline is February 13th.

*NEW* Ventura County Community Foundation Scholarships – The 2015 VCCF Scholarship Program has opened for applications. This is a large collection of scholarships(over 300) with a variety of criteria. Visit VCCF for a list of scholarships and to apply. Deadline is January 12th, but many require letters of recommendation or transcripts. Get started early!

*NEW* Southern California Municipal Athletic Federation (SCMAF) Channel Cities Kevin Lukes Student Scholarship for students in CVUSD with a minimum 3.5 GPA. Application available on Naviance. Deadline to apply is December 19th.

*NEW* Northrup Grumman Engineering Scholars – Deadline February 4th.

*NEW* GE-Ronald Reagan Scholarship Foundation – for exceptional student leaders. Deadline is January 8th.

*NEW* Italian Catholic Federation – for Roman Catholic graduating Seniors of Italian Descent. Deadline March 15.

The Christermon Foundation Beverage Industry College Scholarship Program – for students who are affiliated with the California licensed beverage industry through a parent or grandparent’s current full-time employment with a company holding a valid liquor, beer or wine license. Ronald McDonald House Charities – U.S. Scholarship Program for graduating seniors who reside in Ventura county, are a legal U.S. resident and have a minimum 2.7 GPA. Visit Ronald McDonald House for more information and application. The deadline is January 20th, 2015.

AXA Achievement Scholarship (deadline December 15, 2014) and AXA Community Achievement Scholarship (Deadline February 1, 2015) – for students who have been active in the community or have overcome a personal challenge. Visit AXA-Achievement for information and application.

5.Summer Opportunities

Yale Global Scholars Program for Outstanding High School Students – The YYGS Program is a two-week academic enrichment and leadership training program for talented high school students from around the world, who live and study on the Yale campus during the summer. Students currently in 10th or 11th grade are eligible to apply.

Duke University Summer Session – Current 10th or 11th grade students may apply to the Duke Summer College for High School Students or the Duke Summer Academy for High School Students for grades 9-12. These programs feature an evening film series and evening extended learning opportunities in Academic Writing, SAT training and College preparation. 6.Volunteer Opportunities

Breaking Thru Barriers is a mentor program which brings teens with and without Autism together. The goal is to have fun in a safe, non-judgmental environment. Visit Breaking Thru Barriers for more information or email Sheila Orta at

*UPDATED* Atria Hillcrest Senior Living needs volunteers to help with Arts & Crafts, assist residents with computers, cell phones, Kindles, iPads, etc, assist with activities and games (Bingo Caller?) or general help in the Activities Offices.

There is an urgent need for volunteer tutors in CVUSD! Please consider taking the time to make a difference in a younger student’s life!

Park Oaks Outreach Center needs volunteers every Wednesday and Thursday evenings to help students K-2 with homework. Please contact Ana Alvarez for more information and training dates.

The Brain Connection is seeking volunteers to tutor elementary students at Lang Ranch or Ladera Elementary schools. Please visit for information or to apply by email.

Los Cerritos MS needs volunteers to help tutor students in Math every Tuesday from 2pm to 3:10pm. Contact Mrs. LaRue, assistant principal, at 805 492-3538.

Colina MS is also looking for student tutors for the SMART – Student Mentoring and Real Tutoring program. Stop by the CCC to pick up an application.

7.Job Opportunities

Work Permits are required for paid employment for all students under the age of 18. Applications are now available online. Please turn in completed forms to Mrs. Peters in the CCC and allow 24 hours for processing and approval from the Dean of Attendance.

ALL WORK PERMITS ISSUED LAST SCHOOL YEAR OR OVER THE SUMMER EXPIRE ON SEPTEMBER 12TH, 2014. You will need a new work permit for this school year.

Remember...you need a Work Permit if:

You are under the age of 18

You are working

8.Are You 18?

Or will you turn 18 this year? Then you may be eligible to vote! Take part in the greatest of American traditions and exercise your right to have a say in your future. You may register online or stop by the CCC to pick up a Voter Registration form.

Young men between the ages of 18 and 25 must registerwith the Selective Service System. Visit the Selective Service System for more information.

9.Military Representatives and Opportunities

Military representatives visit the CCC each week during lunch on regular school days to meet with students interested in college scholarships, career opportunities and enlistment. Stop by the CCC for more information.
