News and reports from Broad Oak Trout LakesSeptember 2017

News

The main news of the moment is that the fish have started feeding again! What a relief! We do begin to doubt ourselves and the lakes, and think all sorts of things; have the fish died, been poached out, predated by some voracious beast? No, it was just summer again, particularly late July and August, and the fish went on a diet. Again.

One would think we would remember.

But here we are, on a beautiful, fresh, sunny autumnal morning. The mist has lifted and the breeze is just rippling the surface of the water, trout rising, teasing the first anglers of the day. It sounds the stuff of dreams, but today it is the reality...

Speaking of dreams, the Goldies have not been caught. One in each lake, the Acorn Gold has been seen, but the Oak Tree Gold lurks deep! Don’t forget – if your £ isn’t in it (the pot) you can’t win it!

Fly of the month – August

The record sheet shows a flurry of flies, particularly towards the end of the month. Top take was ‘Damsel’, mainly green but some black and or yellow, some with a blue-flash. A close second was the Montana. Both of these were fished deep, but as the lake temperature seems to have dropped and the cooler nights arrived, takes have been in the top layers (buzzers), and on top (dry daddy long-legs and black spider feature on the record). A few of traditional wets have also been successful; Greenwells glory, Mrs Simpson (with a purple tail) and a butcher. It is great to see a full and varied return sheet.

The September 2016 feature fly was the Daddy Long-legs.

No surprise there. It has already made an appearance this year so give it another whirl! Damsels and buzzers were also good, the classic stand-by flies. However don’t forget those traditional types. I have stocked the fly tray with some Greenwells and Sedges, as a step away from the contemporary.

Biggest Catch for August

Bob East wins the biggest fish accolade for August. He took home a fabulous 4lb rainbow, part of a brilliant haul on the day the fishing switched back on! ‘Anything green’ was the recommended fly of the day.

Paul Spofforth had another can’t-go-wrong day and hooked TWO 3½lbers., as well as two others. Great sport.

Mitch Newman follows in the top-catch list with a 3¼lb rainbow hooked on a Montana. Well done to all of you.

We like to see the record sheets filling up again!

Weather Forecast (taken from Met Office website)

September promises to be ‘changeable’ from next week, moving on to ‘changeable’ later in the month; Wet and windy spells interspersed with bright sunny days. Temperatures are due to be average for the time of year. Not that I know what that is – probably a T-shirt plus a long-sleeved top, with waterproofs as and when required! Vests on by the end of the month.
