State Releases Opioid Prescribing Guidelines for Treatment of Acute Pain

As part of Ohio’s continued effort to curb the misuse and abuse of prescription pain medications and unintentional overdoses, the Governor’s Cabinet Opiate Action Team has adopted new opioid prescribing guidelines for the outpatient management of patients with acute pain, which is generally resolved within 12 weeks.

The guidelines urge prescribers to:

  • Recommend non-opioid treatment options when possible;
  • Check the Ohio Automated Rx Reporting System (OARRS) to see a patient’s other prescriptions for controlled medications;
  • Prescribe only the minimum quantity of opioid pills needed, to discourage automatic refills of opioid prescriptions and reduce the number of leftover opioids that could be diverted or abused; and
  • Reevaluate the patient’s prescribed opioids at certain intervals.

The prescription guidelines were developed by the Governor’s Cabinet Opiate Action Team in conjunction with clinical professional associations, providers, state licensing boards and state agencies. The guideline document is attached and can also be viewed by clicking here.
