Opening Statement

Since Qualifying in 1998, I have worked in general paediatrics both surgical and medical. I then gained several years experience in caring for children requiring paediatric Intensive care (up to and including F Grade) , before moving on to work within paediatrics clinical research as a senior clinical research nurse for the London and South East Medicines for Children’s Research Network in September 2007. Throughout my time in my research roles I have continued to maintain my clinical skills by working on high intensity clinical trials including PICU trials. I have also continued to work regular agency shifts within PICUs across London caring for level 3 patients requiring multisystem organ failure support.

In May 2010 I was appointed to the Role of Research Network Manager to provide Maternity Cover for the London & South East MCRN Local Research Network hosted by Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital and in February 2011 appointed Clinical Research Nurse Manager. My responsibilities in these posts include working with the Host Trust Finance department to manage the LRN Budget, the day to day management of the LRN and its multidisciplinary team across multiple sites, including dealing with staff performance issues as well as clinical responsibility for the clinical trials. In February 2013 I was appointed as Head of Nursing Clinical Research and Clinical Manger of the Somers Clinical Research Facility (CRF) at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital. I am responsible and provide leadership and professional development for all clinical research nurses across the trust alongside strategic management of the CRF.

In April 2012 I was seconded part time to lead on workforce development for paediatric research for the National Institute of Health Research and have been key in developing specific paediatric research nurse training and competencies. I have presented at conferences both nationally and internationally as well as guest lecturing on a number of MSc courses on the subject of paediatric research, the Medicines for Children Research Network and the role of the research nurse. In April 2010 I attended the NIHR GCP Facilitators training course and in conjunction with the Workforce development team at the National Institute of Health Research I led on the development of the Paediatric Good Clinical Practice course which has now been rolled out nationally.

In 2012 I completed an MSc program in advanced practice: Leadership in healthcare. I have found this to be a valuable resource for both my professional and personal development as it has enabled me to reflect and consolidate my existing knowledge and leadership skills as well as prepare me for more senior leadership roles within the NHS. I have been an active member of the UKCRF since 2011 and regularly contribute to national initiatives.

In April 2015 I commenced a two year programme at Boston Children’s Hospital on the Research Nurse Science Fellowship. My research interests include looking at the contributions the clinical research nurse make to the workforce alongside the impact the role has on the paediatric participant experience.
I am a highly motivated competent practitioner, whose work is evidence based and to a high standard. I have excellent clinical, organisational, leadership and communication skills and work well both independently and within a multidisciplinary team within a variety of situations.
