Risk = likelihood of event x severity of outcome

If the score is more than 20 – the activity should not take place

A score of 15-19 – indicates a high risk activity

A score of 9 – 14 indicates a medium risk activity

A score below 9 – indicates a low risk activity

Slips and trips / 3 / 2 / 6 / Watch where you are walking and what you are walking on (i.e. in wet conditions muddy areas may be more slippery).
Getting lost / 3 / 1 / 3 / Teacher and helpers make regular head counts. Children told to stay with their group leader and do not wander off alone. If do go astray should find Farm staff (in red uniform, point out on tour).
Abduction / 1 / 5 / 5 / As above, including do not talk to strangers.
Nettle Stings / 4 / 1 / 4 / Look out for these plants and stay away from them.
Dog faeces/bites / 3 / 2 / 6 / Do not touch any dogs in the park. Be careful where you are standing and sitting.
Trampling by animals / 1 / 4 / 4 / Do not enter paddocks/fenced areas or sheds. If an animal escapes, please do not approach it, alert a member of staff.
Nips/bites by animals / 3 / 3 / 9 / Be careful when stroking animals, do not put fingers near animal’s mouths. Do not feed the animals.
Zoonoses (animal related illnesses) / 2 / 5 / 10 / Do not put fingers in mouths after touching the animals. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after contact, at the end of your visit, before eating or drinking & when remove footwear at home. Washbasins are located in the toilet block at the farmyard, as well as in the Visitor Centre. At lambing time pregnant women are advised to stay away from the lambing area due to the risk of toxoplasmosis.
Catching clothes/parts of the body on fences or wire / 3 / 3 / 9 / Watch where you are walking. Do not climb fences or gates. Report any broken fences etc to a member of staff.
Splinters / 3 / 3 / 9 / Watch hands and arms on wooden fences/posts
Kicked by animals / 2 / 5 / 10 / Do not enter paddocks or sheds. Stay away from animals being moved through the farmyard.
Bee Stings / 2 / 5 / 10 / Be aware of people with allergies to bee stings. To avoid being stung do not annoy bees and wasps
Hazardous litter e.g. broken glass, metal and needles / 2 / 3 / 6 / Before visit farm staff check areas within the farm and immediately surrounding the Visitor Centre entrances that school groups will be using.
Fire / 1 / 5 / 5 / Raise the alarm or when the fire alarm sounds leave by the nearest exit and follow staff directions.
Tools and Equipment / 4 / 2 / 8 / Do not touch any equipment that may be out being used by farm staff.

Classroom/Display Room Windows / 3 / 1 / 3 / When windows are open please ensure that they are fully opened and don’t protrude into the classroom
Portable display boards / 1 / 3 / 3 / Children not to run indoors and not to lean on portable display board. Boards should not be placed in positions that allow children to easily knock them over.
Electrical sockets / 1 / 4 / 4 / All sockets fitted with child safety covers and children not to play with sockets. If socket covers are missing please inform a member of farm staff.
Bumping into tables / 4 / 1 / 4 / No running indoors
Cleaning cupboard / 1 / 4 / 4 / Cleaning cupboard to remain locked when not in use by cleaner. Hazardous cleaning materials to be stored away.

OTHER HAZARDS AND SITE SAFTEY RULES

Toilets / Children should be supervised by a member of school staff/adult at all times while using the toilets.
Visitor Centre office / No access unless accompanied by a member of farm staff and supervised by an adult.
Other Centre users / The Visitor Centre is shared with adult service users with learning disabilities who may attend the toilet unattended so please supervise children’s toilet visits.
Fire exits / Be aware of all fire exits. In the unlikely event of a fire leave the building by the nearest exit and assemble on the tarmac area at the rear of the Visitor Centre. Fire doors should be unlocked, please inform a member of farm staff if you find them locked. Be aware that children are able to open fire doors and that these areas should be constantly supervised.
