NEWARK & NOTTINGHAMSHIRE AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY’S SHOWGROUND BEARS FRUIT FOR THE FUTURE.
One of sixteen Bramley Apple Trees will be planted at Newark Showground site on Friday 16 March at 11.00am
The planting involves three partners; Nottinghamshire Community Foundation (NCF), Roger Merryweather DL and Newark Showground.
Paddy Tipping, Chair of NCF, says: “The Bramley Apple and the Newark & Nottinghamshire County Show are two defining images of Nottinghamshire. We aim to ensure that Nottinghamshire Community Foundation joins them.
“The Foundation is the biggest grant-giving body in Nottinghamshire, giving over £25 million to local good causes. What's more, we aim to increase this as we set up new funds with local companies, trusts and families. Our current plans include unlocking dormant bank accounts and charitable trusts and putting the money back into our community. As well as matching local philanthropy with £1 million from the Government’s ‘Community First’ pot.
“We love to celebrate our heritage and enhance our environment like this showground gift, whereby working together we can do even more.”
Roger Merryweather, who is also Patron the Community Foundation, comments: “I am delighted to be giving these trees to the showground, which will help to enhance the strength of the show in promoting the excellence of the county's food products.
“The Bramley Fund has given trees to groups and charities across Nottinghamshire and if you want some trees for your community please visit the Foundation’s website: www.nottscf.org.uk ”.
The 2012 Newark & Nottinghamshire County Show President, Mich Stevenson OBE DL adds: “We are delighted to receive this gift of historic trees and thank the partners for choosing Newark & Nottinghamshire Showground as a suitable site.”
Adrian Johnston, Chief Exceutive of Newark & Nottinghamshire Agricultural Society says: “The Bramley apple tree, synonymous with Nottinghamshire, and Southwell in particular, is renowned for its taste and versatility throughout the catering world. We are looking forward to being able to feature the fruits from our very own small orchard on our menus in due course. As an agricultural Society, running one of the busiest show grounds in the UK, we are proud of our Nottinghamshire heritage and will be featuring other aspects of Nottinghamshire life on boards around the site. Please look out for these when visiting Newark Showground in the future and find out more about our fabulous county.”
