CLASS TITLE:REHABILITATION SPECIALIST - BLIND - SES

This is professional work providing direct rehabilitation services to blind and visually impaired individuals on an individual basis.

  • Conducts interviews with blind and visually impaired clients to assess their eligibility and feasibility for achieving a vocational, independent living or educational goal with assistance from senior specialist or supervisor.
  • Records existing problems and evaluates individual needs for maximizing independent living skills and/or marketable employment skills.
  • Reviews the medical, social and psychological records of visually impaired clients; uses those records to appropriately plan services and to make recommendations for further examinations.
  • Authorizes the purchase of medical, hospital, psychiatric and other special services provided in the rehabilitation process with prior supervisory approval.
  • Gathers medical, psychological and psychiatric information to determine the degree of individual impairment, functional limitations and proper course of treatment of accommodation in consultation with senior specialist or supervisor.
  • Participates in a team approach to the rehabilitation process, gathering information from a variety of rehabilitation professionals.
  • Provides guidance and counseling in career planning and develops placement strategies in concert with the client and supervisor.
  • Provides training in the client's home or in other locations in skills such as homemaking, household chores, travel techniques, touch typing, braille, personal and communications.
  • Maintains client records.
  • Performs related work as required.
