New Student Fee & Budget Proposal
FY 2011-2012
Prepared by:

Career Center
Part I: Overview of fee
Proposed Fee Name:
AMC Career Center
Purpose /Justification: To provide on-going full time career assistance to AMC.
Intended student population/cohort to be charged:
Degree seeking student enrolled in a degree program at AMC who also pay the Student Activity Fee. References to ‘degree seeking students’ or ‘AMC students’ below refers only to students as defined above.
Dollar Amount of New Fee: $18/year
This is a mandatory, student purpose fee. Students will not be able to opt out of this fee.
Term to be implemented: Fall 2011
Fee will be charged once/year in the fall term, effective Fall 2011.
This proposal is intended to request 1.0 FTE permanent position and supplies funding via a student fee to be implemented.
Expiration Date: Fall 2015. For the fee to continue in Fall 2016, the fee will be reviewed and resubmitted for referendum approval by the Anschutz Medical Campus student body.
Part II: Overview of Program/Activity/Service
Describe the mission, vision and values of your program/activity/service:
The mission of the Anschutz Medical Campus Career Center is to provide career assistance to students at the Anschutz Medical Campus. We are committed to educating students through personalized and innovative services and resources that will empower students to make improvements in their strategic job search and career-related decisions while assisting them in becoming successful professionals and positive contributors to a global workplace.
When fully funded, The AMC Career Center is committed to developing and maintaining partnerships with academic units that support the career goals of AMC students. With a continued and stable career advisor serving these career needs, including career counseling services to those students who perhaps need a higher level of personalized career guidance to redirect their career, additional services such as assistance with residency application packets can begin to be offered. Under the current 2 day per week staffing by a graduate student, minimal services are offered which include résumé writing, CV, networking, job search and general career information.
Program/Activity/Service Provided:
Since Fall 2009 through the present, the AMC Career Center has been staffed with graduate/health care professional level career counseling interns who provide services including, résumé, cover letter, and CV assistance interviewing and networking skill development, and job search coaching.
The AMC Career Center offers programs and services that facilitate students’ career development, preparation, and successful transition from university studies to career. During this second pilot year, the AMC Career Center offers two primary programs:
1. Job Search Assistance:
· 30 Minute Walk-In Assistance: resume, CV, and cover letter reviews (no appointment necessary)
· Online Assistance: online resume, CV and/or cover letter assistance via email
· 50-Minute Job Search Appointment: develop and strengthen job search, networking, and interviewing skills
2. Career Assessments / Information:
Current resources include Focus 2, ExploreHealthCareers.org, MyPlan.com, & Optimal Resume (Optimal Resume Builder, Interview Prep, &Website Builder)
If AMC would like to have access to other than the above specific career technology, a separate cost is involved to include AMC. For example, Vault.com -- an example of a premium career technology tool -- would cost an estimated $3500 for a one-year subscription. Under the current agreement with Vault, AMC usage is not included and the Career Center will not be absorbing the costs for adding AMC to current subscriptions. This cost could potentially be paid for by separate fees charged to post docs, alumni, etc.
If the Student Fee is Not Approved:
The Career Center at AMC has now served AMC students for approximately 2 years. It has been staffed since the beginning by graduate students in career counseling tracks from CSU and UCD. In preparation for working at the AMC Career Center, the career advisor is put through an extensive training (approximately 40 hours), as the knowledge curve to get these career advisors up to speed is very steep for medical career advising. Unfortunately, the UCD/CPCE program has discontinued their career counseling tract and there is no guarantee that future qualified graduate students will be interested in this opportunity. In addition, this training takes a substantial amount of time from our Denver staff each year to prepare a new AMC Advisor.
Having graduate students to staff this position is not optimal and does not allow for a higher level of services or growth of this position to be achieved. Staffing the AMC Career Center with graduate students was never meant to be a continuing solution. If stable funding is not provided, my recommendation would be that the AMC Career Center be closed.
Sharing current professional staff from the Denver Campus Career Center is not an option as our demand for services is very high and continues to grow. Our services at the Downtown Campus are also funded by student fees which do not include AMC students. We could discuss a “fee for services” similar to what we charge alumni which is $45 for 50 minute appointment and a $15 yearly fee for use of the Just ASK! Job Link. These services would need to be provided at the Denver location, forcing the AMC students to travel to this location. It is however a solution that could be discussed if interested.
The Career Center currently offers Anschutz Medical Campus students a variety of services that are beyond the scope of what the schools/college/programs at Anschutz Medical Campus provide. The Student Assistance Office (SAO) does not have the resources to offer services in the areas currently managed by the UCDenver Career Center.

Other Resources:
There are no other resources to support the AMC Career Center after fiscal year June 30, 2011. Currently it is operating at a basic level as a pilot program funded with temporary support from the Division of Student Affairs. If implemented, the proposed fee will fully support the AMC Career Center beginning fall 2011.

Part III. Budget
Proposal: Recommendation for a 1.0 FTE Permanent Career Advisor position for Anschutz Medical Center Career Center
The AMC Career Center proposes to expand its services offering resources and expertise to AMC students and alumni who in turn will become better prepared to conquer the career related challenges they face upon graduation. The goal of the UCD Career Center is designed to identify and contribute to the Anschutz Medical Students’ career-related needs.
Recommendations: Beginning fall 2011 to hire 1.0 FTE to expand services for AMC students as well as service to AMC Alumni* (*separate charge required).
Total Revenue
Projected fee revenue: $ 58,500 (c. 3250 students X $18)
No additional revenue is expected to be generated with the exception of a potential fee charged for staff, post docs, and alumni* clients using the AMC Career Center. This anticipated revenue collected from the revenue of staff, post docs, alumni might be a potential source of income which could potentially purchase career technology and other equipment needs of the Career Center.
Budget/Expenditure Plan:
