Sports Premium 2017-18
Cliff Lane Primary School believes that children make progress and reach their potential if they are happy and enjoying their time at school. The children have a ‘can-do’ ethos and believe in the personal statement of:
Doing my best, being my best and trying my best
What is the Sports Premium?
The Government is providing funding to cater for substantial school sport investment. This funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, and will see money going directly to primary school head teachers to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children. The sport funding can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools.
Purpose of funding
Schools will have to spend the sport funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom tochoose how they do this.
Possible uses for the funding include:
  • hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work alongside primary teachers when teaching PE
  • new or additional sport clubs
  • paying for professional development opportunities in PE/sport
  • providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE/sport
  • running sport competitions, or increasing participation in the school games
  • buying quality assured professional development modules or materials for PE/sport
  • providing places for pupils on after school sport clubs.
How will we be spending the Sports Funding and who will benefit?
The school agrees that the money must be used so that: all children benefit regardless of sporting ability; that the most able children are given the opportunity to compete in advanced tournaments; that staff have access to training opportunities and continued professional development.
Hiring qualified sports coaches to work alongside teachers when teaching PE
The school has hired the services of Suffolk Norse swimming teachers to provide swimming lessons for Year 4. Lessons will be taught by Suffolk Norse staff alongside teachers. Children at Cliff Lane also benefit from two PE sessions a week. One session is led by the class teacher and the other is delivered by highly trained and experienced coaches from Inspire Suffolk.
Increasing school clubs and participation
The school offers extra-curricular activities, accessed by children from Reception, Key Stage One and Key Stage Two. Several clubs run each week with a small fee charged. All clubs are run by coaches from Inspire Suffolk and promise to deliver high levels of variety and opportunities for all children.
During the Autumn term, the football and netball teams are able to purposefully engage new players and beginners, as well as the more advanced players from within the school to allow children who are more able to play against quality opposition whilst developing their skills to a higher level.
Providing opportunities for children to compete
Cliff Lane Primary are members of IPSSA whereby children get the opportunity to participate in a variety of fixtures and competitions whereby team skills and sportsmanship are essential.

Impact
  • We were able to ‘top up’ our resources as we already had several of a good quality from the previous academic year. We did not need to spend as much on resources as the 2016-17 academic year due to the amount of Sainsbury’s school vouchers we received.
  • Participation in sports clubs has increased even more with over 20% of children attending clubs run by the Inspire coaches. This is due to the wide variety of clubs that have been offered this year.
  • Through introducing Inspire Suffolk coaches 4 days a week instead of the 3 days we had last year, children have been able to take part in longer and more varied PE lessons. Planning cover for teachers has also been more consistent and allows teachers to plan for other curriculum areas adequately. Inspire Suffolk has also continued to deliver PE to an exceptional standard.
  • Through introducing nearly twice as many clubs this year, attendance in clubs has risen again. Inspire Suffolk coaches now also provide after school provision meaning it is of the best quality. 99 children are currently attending clubs run in the Autumn 1 half term, which is nearly one quarter of the children across the school.
