AB Charitable Trust –Deadline: 3rd March 2017

UK registered charities who are working to combat abuse and violations of human rights and to support the disadvantaged, have until the 3rd March 2017 to apply for funding through the AB Charitable Trust.

In particular, the Trust is seeking applications from charities working to support:

  • Refugees and asylum seekers
  • Prisoners and penal reform
  • Those addressing the needs of the most marginalised and neglected groups in society.

Grants range in size, with most grants awarded being in the range £10,000 to £20,000. UK registered charities with an income of between £150,000 and £1.5 million are eligible to apply. The Trust does not normally fund charities with large national or international links.

Austin and Hope Pilkington Trust –Deadline: 28th February 2017

The Austin Hope and Pilkington Trust have announced that their next round of grant funding will open on the 1st February 2017. During this funding round grants of £1,000 will be available to registered charities that have an income of between £50,000 and £1 million for projects that relate to helping the elderly. The Trust will run four funding rounds each year with a different theme and for each funding round will give priority to projects that focus on homelessness, domestic abuse, prisoners/offenders, training/education, counselling/support and activities for those with limited access or opportunities. BBC Children in Need (Main Grants) –Deadline: 1st June 2017

The next closing date for applications to the BBC Children in Need Main Grants programme is the 1st June 2017. Grants of over £10,000 per project are available to not for profit organisations and schools that work with young people who are experiencing disadvantage through:

  • Illness, distress, abuse or neglect
  • Any kind of disability
  • Behavioural or psychological difficulties
  • And / or living in poverty or situations of deprivation.

Schools can also apply for funding but the project must be additional to their statutory duties.

BBC Children in Need (Small Grants) –Deadline: 1st March 2017

Not for profit organisations such as such schools; registered charities; voluntary organisations; churches; and community interest groups; etc. can apply for grants of up to £10,000 per year for up to three years through the BBC Children in Need Small Grants programme. The grants are available for projects working with children and young people of 18 years and under experiencing disadvantage through illness, distress, abuse or neglect; any kind of disability; behavioural or psychological difficulties; and / or living in poverty or situations of deprivation. Biffa –Deadline: 20th April 2017

Biffa Awards are part of the Landfills Communities Fund and currently provide funding for projects of between £10,000 and £75,000 under four different themes:

  • Rebuilding Biodiversity
  • Community Buildings
  • Cultural Facilities
  • Recreation.

The Biffa Award Board meets three times a year, at each meeting the Board considers applications from two different themes.

The next meeting will be held in June and will consider applications under its Recreation and Community Buildings funding themes. Funding under these themes is available to not-for-profit organisations with projects within 5 miles of a significant Biffa operation or within 10 miles of an active Biffa landfill site.

The Recreation theme provides funding to projects that transform open spaces for the benefit of the community, providing them with more opportunities to become involved in recreational activity.

The Community Buildings theme can provide funding for the improvement or replacement of community buildings, examples of projects that fall under this category include replacement heating systems, extensions, repairs and the upgrading /installation of kitchen facilities. The closing date for applications under these themes is the 20th April 2017.

British and Foreign Schools Society –Deadline: April 2017

Grants are available to support schools and registered charities that wish to undertake educational work with children and young people in disadvantaged areas.

The British & Foreign Schools Society (BFSS) normally makes grants for educational projects totalling about £600,000 in any one year. The majority (85% of grants) are made to charities and educational bodies (with charitable status). Schools wishing to apply need to have either charitable status or "exempt charity" status. The next meeting of the Committee is in June, with an application deadline in April, date to be confirmed. More information at:

British Ecological Society Outreach Grants –Deadline: March 2017

The British Ecological Society has announced that its Outreach Grants programme will re-open for applications on the 16th January 2017 with a deadline to apply in March 2017.

Through the programme, individuals and organisations such as schools, museums, libraries and community groups will be able to apply for grants to promote ecological science to a wide audience. The funding is available for projects that increase public understanding of, and engagement with ecology. Applications from museums and schools are welcome but projects must involve significant outreach beyond schools. Projects aimed solely at delivering curriculum to school children will not be considered. The maximum award is £2,000. However, the award may be used as part-funding for larger projects involving other sponsors. More information at:

Comic Relief (Comic Relief Tech vs Abuse initiative) –Deadline: 13th March 2017

Organisations and partnerships who are working to develop technology solutions that will make a difference to people affected by domestic abuse and enable service providers to extend their reach, have until the 13th March 2017 to apply for funding under the new Comic Relief Tech vs Abuse initiative.

Grants of between £20,000 and £50,000 are being made available. The fund will support initiatives that aim to address key challenges that will:

  • Enable women experiencing abuse to access key information in a way that is easy to find, simple to navigate and quick to interact with
  • Enable access to services for support at any time of day or night
  • Provide control over online data, privacy settings and social media accounts
  • Create accessible information on the legal process and the financial situation women find themselves in
  • Use the web to raise awareness of what an abusive relationship looks like and provoke women and girls experiencing abuse to recognise this and get support.

Comic Relief (Levelling the Field, UK programme )–Deadline: 16th March 2017

Comic Relief has launched a new funding programme to support projects that use the power of sport to empower women and girls to reach their full potential. The Levelling the Field, UK programme is a £1 million initiative and organisations working in partnership in the UK can apply for grants of between £30,000 and £250,000, over a period of between 12 and 36 months. Comic Relief will only accept applications from organisations working in partnership. The partnership must include a track record of working with women and girls, and using sport as a tool for change. There must be one lead organisation which must have at least one partner. Comic Relief are encouraging a variety of different types of projects. This could be a pilot for an innovative piece of work or the continued development of a proven piece of work. Comic Relief / England Rugby (Try for Change Fund) –Available from 6th February 2017

In partnership with England Rugby, Comic Relief is launching its first funding initiative through the Try for Change fund on 6th February 2017.

In 2016, Comic Relief and England Rugby joined forces to launch the Try for Change Fund. The fund will use rugby union and the rugby union community to deliver social change in England and across the world. Bringing together rugby’s core values of teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship it will work to tackle a number of social challenges around education attainment, social inclusion, unemployment, mental and physical wellbeing, personal development and community cohesion.

Sport can play an important role in improving the lives of millions of people across the world, bringing people together to play, learn, improve their health and benefit from shared experiences. Try for Change works to promote, support and grow rugby as a tool for social good. It aims to help people reach their goals and fulfil their potential, as well as deliver long-term benefits to the wider community.

The first initiative launched under the Try for Change Fund is a small grants programme aimed at supporting smaller charities, community groups, and local community rugby clubs in England. Organisations can apply for between £2,500 and £10,000, for up to 12 months. We will be prioritising applications which target the most vulnerable and marginalised groups, for example young people who are NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training), local refugees, or young offenders.

Football Foundation (Grow the Game) –Deadline: 29th March 2017

The Football Foundation "Grow the Game" grant scheme has re-opened for applications and will close on the 29th March 2017. The scheme aims to increase participation in football by both players and volunteers. Not for profit organisations that are planning to set up two new football teams over the next two years are eligible to apply. For 2017 funding is available to organisations wishing to set up male teams - under-14s to adult; female teams - under-7s to adult; and disability teams. Organisations that can apply for funding include football clubs; youth clubs with a football programme; futsal clubs; community groups/centre/clubs; charitable organisations; parish councils; sports associations; local authorities; multi-sports clubs; companies limited by guarantee; professional club community schemes; industrial and provident societies; unincorporated not-for-profit organisations; university and college teams playing in FA affiliated community leagues. Organisations are able to receive a grant of £1,500 per new team created over two or three years with financial support being reduced in the second or third year of the project. More information at:

Greggs Foundation (Environmental Grants) –Deadline: 3rd March 2017

Schools as well as local community groups can apply for funding of up to £2,000 through the Greggs Foundation for projects to improve the local environment. The Environmental Grant Scheme is funded by the 5p levy on carrier bag sales in Greggs shops.

Through the scheme funding is available to:

  • Purchase equipment
  • Sessional salary costs
  • Purchase of trees/plants
  • Small capital projects
  • Learning activities.

The type of activities that could be funded include for example:

  • A growing project in a local primary school
  • A group of volunteers who completed litter picking exercises in their local parks or along a local riverbank
  • An allotment project for people suffering early stages of dementia
  • Clearing an area of wasteland in an area of high social need to create a community garden; etc.

The Foundation is more likely to make grants to local organisations based near Greggs shops. The closing date for applications is the 3rd March 2017.

Grow Wild –Deadline: 27th February 2017

Young people aged between 12 and 25 can apply for grants of up to £500 for projects that raise the awareness about the importance of UK native wild flowers and plants.

The funding is being made available through Grow Wild, the biggest-ever wild flower campaign, bringing people together to transform local spaces with native, pollinator-friendly wild flowers and plants. Two funding streams are available. Transform a Space and Get Creative. The Get Creative stream will support young people who wish to use visual art, music, poetry, dance or theatre to share this message. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to showcase their project at an event in Edinburgh between 23rd and 25th June 2017.

The Transform a Space stream will support projects led by young people who want to transform a space in their community using native wild flowers and plants, these projects will need to involve other people in the community that are a different age, such as a local primary schools, resident’s groups or community projects. To be eligible for either stream applicants must be known to a youth, community or education organisation that can receive the funding on their behalf.

The closing date for applications is midday on the 27th February 2017.

Harry Payne Fund (The) –Deadline: Rolling

The Heart of England Community Foundation is now accepting applications for The Harry Payne Fund. This fund provides grants of between £250 and £1000 to support causes in Birmingham and within a 25 mile radius of the city centre, including Black Country, Coventry, Warwickshire, and parts of Worcestershire and Staffordshire. Registered charities and CIO's with an income of less than £500,000 who support the disadvantaged are welcome to apply and funding is available for specific projects and general running costs. Examples of the types of causes that have previously been supported include: care of the elderly; victims, offenders and their families; disability organisations; organisations encouraging understanding between different faiths; relief of poverty, particularly food poverty; local environmental projects; and homelessness. This program has a rolling deadline with funding decisions being made four times a year. More information at:
