The Flying Scot was designed by the late Gordon “Sandy” Douglass, internationally famous sailboat racer. Each Flying Scot is hand-crafted with the highest quality materials and methods. The Scot is a low-displacement design (draws only 8 inches with the board up), and has a flat, tapered shape which will allow her to plane (this means she will lift out of the water, like a power boat, and is not limited to her waterline hull speed. Her 200 square feet of working sail area provides the power to move well in any wind speed. Get her on a beam reach with 15 knots of wind, and experience the thrill of what has been called the “best day sailer in the world!”
Flying Scots Are Stable and Safe
The Flying Scot can seat 8 persons, can sail comfortably with 4 and is easily single-handed. Her center cockpit design maintains a balanced center of gravity for best performance and handling. Her slightly tunneled hull design, hard bilges and weighted centerboard provide a strong righting moment. And with over 600 lbs of reserve buoyancy, the Flying Scot is unsinkable. The wide side deck and seat allow the Scot to take a knock down with little or no water in the boat, and one person can easily right her in the water.
The Scot is NOT a flimsy acrobatic design. No trapezes, hiking straps or other go-fast contraptions are necessary. Sailing is done comfortably from chair height seats (with plenty of clearance from the boom) and, if the wind picks up, you can sit upright on the wide side decks and enjoy an extra thrill. In my 35 years experience with Flying Scots, I have never been able to capsize her even with both sails up. Stable, Fast, and Safe! She is a stable boat for the beginning sailor, as well as a challenge for the expert. It’s the boat of a lifetime – for a lifetime.
