New England Yearly Meeting of Friends (Quakers) Student Scholarship Grants

Announcement of Grant Program Grant Year 2017

New England Yearly Meeting of Friends (Quakers) Student Scholarship Grants

New England Yearly Meeting (NEYM) offers grants to students of any age enrolled in post-‐secondary educational or professional training programs, whether full-‐ or part-‐time. Awardees are eligible on the basis of spiritual connection to the Religious Society of Friends and participation in NEYM.

You do not have to be a member of a monthly meeting to apply, but you must be committed to Friends’ principles and willing to share the role of Quakerism in your life. You should be able to describe in your personal essay what draws you to Quakerism, whether you are an attender or member of a meeting or otherwise connected to Friends. Your recommenders should be chosen carefully to speak to your commitment to Friends principles and your prior participation in the NEYM community.

An applicant may only submit one request per calendar year. Request may be made for any amount of funding up to a maximum of $2,000 per year. The total funds available for the year are limited to $30,000. If the number of requests totals more than the limit of $30,000, the amount of the awards will be reduced equally among all those awarded grants.

How to Apply

Complete the Student Financial Assistance application from the NEYM Student Scholarship Granting Committee of Permanent Board, including a personal statement and two letters of recommendation, one of which must come from the clerk of your Monthly Meeting, a representative of NEYM (for example, a youth programs coordinator or Quaker camp administrator), or a Quaker school teacher or administrator.

Essay prompt:

In an essay of 750 to 1,000 words, first describe the role of Quakerism in your daily life. Give evidence of your relationship to the Religious Society of Friends both in terms of your spiritual formation and specifically to the community of Quakers in New England (NEYM). Second, indicate your need for financial resources and explain how the grant would be applied to a specific educational/training program. You may also wish to relate your goals in education to the place that Quakerism has held and might hold in your life moving forward.

Please arrange for two letters of support, one of which must come from the clerk of your Monthly Meeting, a representative of NEYM (for example, a youth programs coordinator or Quaker camp administrator), or a Quaker school teacher or administrator. These letters should witness to your involvement with the Religious Society of Friends in New England and speak to your need for financial assistance in pursuing your education.
