Wakefield Council is responsible for setting term dates for community and voluntary controlled schools while governing bodies of foundation and voluntary aided schools are responsible for setting their own term dates. Academies (and free schools) have the freedom to set their own calendar.

From 2015/2016, the coalition government is proposing, as part of the Deregulation Bill, that all maintained schools will be able to set their own calendar. Further updates will be posted on the the Council'swebsite in due course.

We would like to seek your views on the proposed term dates.

In determining the future school term dates, we would like yourviews on the proposed term dates for the academic years 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17.

You can email your views by completing the online form, on ourwebsite (see Related Links). The closing date for responses is 20 September 2013.

To Headteachers of all Infant, Junior and Infant and Junior Schools including Academies

Dear Colleague

Primary Headcount & Infant Class Sizes Information Autumn 2013

The Council has a statutory duty to monitor infant class sizes in our schools and therefore requires you to provide class size data on the form attached.

Class Size Information

This information is used by the Council to monitor primary class sizes and will be used to ensure compliance with the infant class size regulations. Schools are asked to outline how they intend arranging all their primary classes, in the autumn term.

If a school operates a split year group then each year should be indicated in the ‘NC Year Group’ e.g. R/Y1, Y1/Y2, Y3/Y4 etc.

Please note: the following instruction from the DFE. The law relating to infant class sizes under section 1 (6) of the School Standards and Framework Act 1998, LA’s and schools must exercise their functions with a view to securing that the infant class size limit is complied with. That limits to 30 any class containing a majority of children that will reach the age of 5, 6 or 7 during the course of the school year. Regulations set out the only circumstances in which pupils may be taught in classes that exceed that size.

See Related Links for the legislation.gov.ukwebsite.

Should you have any queries regarding completing the form then please do not hesitate to contact my colleague Ashleigh Howden (01924 305201)

Please ensure that your Class Size Information Autumn 2013 is uploaded on to Its Learning (Census Return area) no later than Friday 27 September 2013.

Yours sincerely,

Stephen Wood
