J. Kotinek called to Order: 11:11 AM

  1. Welcome – Ingrid Woods thanks everyone via lunch and offers tours. Shedrick Johnson introduced as advisor for men’s basketball. His contact information, along with other Athletics advisors, is in our New Advisors Handbook. All around introductions of all attendees.
  1. Officer and Committee Reports
  1. President – Jon Kotinek –No AOC meeting recently so nothing to report.
  1. President Elect – Amanda Mather –NSC Committee has new video with information on student fees and tentative NSC schedule. Schedules are about the same. Contact Meredith Malnar to get link for video. Awards and Awards Breakfast Committees will meet on Friday this week.
  1. VP Programs – John Louis Bolch –February Monthly Meeting is TEXAAN. Regular registration until this Friday, then must pay late registration. Social with the Corps of Cadets was great. Owe them a big thank you. J. Kotinek has thank you cards for the Corps of Cadets and Athletics-please sign.

1.M. Gibler-TAMU Army ROTC won the McArthur Award for the biggest school.

  1. VP Communications – Erin Fisk –Communications Committee met a few weeks ago and are working on Facebook page and UAC website but no changes to put forward yet.
  1. Parliamentarian – Ruthi Hernandez –None
  1. Secretary –Amanda Schwede –December and January meeting minutes need to be approved. E. Fisk moved to approve both. S. Murdock seconded. Motion to approve both monthly minutes approved unanimously.
  1. Treasurer – Jeana Goodson –None
  1. Immediate Past President – Sam Murdock – Plug for TEXAAN.
  1. Old Business
  1. TEXAAN Update –S. Murdock said thanks if you’re signed up and to have advisors send information to each college’s advisors who have not registered. Texas State rivals TAMU in number of sessions. J. Kotinek-Thursday evening includes lots of restaurants, art, music, Texas Aggie Swing Cats. Great keynotes and sessions planned. 180 registered so far. Award tabulated on site for best session. E. Fisk-need volunteers. Congratulations to Sam Murdock, Rebecca Hapes, and Patrick Williams for NACADA award for Mad Hatter presentation. That presentation will also be at TEXAAN. J. Kotinek-annual Awards Breakfast will include general meeting instead of at TEXAAN/Symposium.
  1. New Business
  2. Mary Broussard –President’s Meritorious Award application will be posted this week. Deadline is April 1, 2011. Mary will contact Awards Committee to meet and discuss applicants. Will announce winners April 28th. Peggy Samson is her office’s marketing person. Contact Peggy and Mary for recognition of hard work, such as McArthur Award, NACADA presentation Award, etc. to have on their website. People with business titles will be under office of Assoc. Provost and at some point in near future Francis Nelson will not be there and neither will that position. Mary will be the contact for finances. People in their offices could be moved but nothing is definite. (Lofton is moving there.) She has set aside money for an assessment conference this year. Contact her if you’re interested in helping. Includes meals. Wants people from Texas to come and talk about assessment. What assessment means to us as advisors?
  1. Big Idea – Address assessment of academic advising by creating a task force, demystifying assessment, and emphasizing student learning outcomes. J. Kotinek-There is an online appointment calendar in process of being created that will include these learning outcomes. M. Yeater-Better to be proactive than to wait and let legislature decide what we will do. A. Holmes-Assessing advising is done differently in each department/college and by different people. Advisors see it as overwhelming when they’re already overwhelmed with registration. M. Broussard-Reason Dr. Matthews wanted advisors involved in assessment to see what students should know by the time they graduate, how they are learning, etc. Assessment is very tailored to each program. R. Hernandez-Doesn’t understand how advisors could be held accountable for students’ knowledge. Wants to empower them to want to learn and how to do it. M. Broussard-Be an active participant in assessment. Wants her conference to look at student learning outcomes specifically ad how they affect advising. J. Kotinek-Passed out copy of learning outcomes for undergraduates and advising. M. Yeager-Look at it as how the student is prepared and able to get a job or education after graduation. Undergraduate schedules are so packed, how can other outcomes be done, like communications? S. Murdock-Assessing Writing Center won’t give correct numbers because it would only assess students coming in, or assessing an ENGL course will only assess that class. J.L. Bolch-Finding what needs to be assessed. A. Holmes-Standardized assessment has too much overlap and does not include discussions amongst assessment programs on problems, assessing and how. An advising taskforce team could help advisors understand assessment. P. Harwell-Student Learning Center has meetings to discuss assessment to give opportunity to learn what’s working. M. Broussard-Loraine Phillips is over assessment at TAMU. R. Russell-An assessment conference is coming up. P. Harwell-Moves to create a taskforce on advising assessment. A. Mather seconded. Passed unanimously. R. Hernandez is interested in being on the task force. J. Kotinek-Task force would concentrate on student learning outcomes for academic advising and how that works with Baccalaureate Student Learning Outcomes. P. Harwell-Making it your assessment and building assessment. J. Kotinek-Gathering information from University on how other areas are doing assessment as well as interlacing student learning outcomes with those of advising. J.L. Bolch-Task force is just gathering information so when state mandates assessment, we already have something to give them. M. Yeater-Bill came up this week in the legislature that required Coordinating Board to come up with an assessment tool and it will be tied to funding. No specifics in it yet as to what will be assessed. We should expect an exit interview. M. Gibler-Learning outcomes are not our responsibility. Legislature wants the outcomes that advisors can affect, to be a part of. Army ROTC has to provide assessment data to the government due to large amount of funding they receive.
  1. J. Kotinek-Vida Wilhelm retiring will leave a vacancy on COMPASS Users Advisory Group and will be replaced by Ruthi Hernandez. Ramesh runs meetings and said it is an open meeting. This Friday at 1:00 PM in GSC.

3.NACADA 2011 Conference now accepting proposals. February 21 is the deadline to submit presentation proposals for the conference, Advising with Altitude, scheduled for October 2-5 in Denver, CO.
