Professional Development Plan
2015-2016
A committee of administrators, certified and classified staff, review the plan annually. The staff will complete a survey each spring to help plan for the following year’s professional development. The professional development plan is included in the ACSIP plan.

Guiding Principles
● Improve student learning and achievement by promoting high quality classroom
instruction.
● Use professional development to expand staff capacity and provide the staff with
tools and support to impact student learning.
● Promote educational leadership among the administrative staff.
● Provide opportunities and resources that support professional learning activities
initiated by an individual staff member or group of staff members.
● Promote and support innovation and experimentation which improve
teaching and learning.
● Provide professional learning that is ongoing and sustained, that can be applied in the
classroom.
● Support educators’ professional responsibility to remain current in their field and
assume leadership roles within their content area(s).
● Promote collaborative site-based learning communities.
● Incorporate technology as an integral part of Nettleton School District’s curriculum.
Goals
● Student learning and performance will improve by meeting AMO’s and increasing performance on the state mandated assessments.
● Teachers will align standards according to their subject area to generate common understanding and vocabulary.
● The staff will engage in formal activities to create a deeper understanding of the
content knowledge.
● Teachers will participate in training in assessments and will have opportunities to
create, discuss, and identify forms of assessment that will inform instruction to
improve student learning and performance.
● The district will design district-wide professional learning procedures to include a
webpage and an annual update of the district professional development plan.
Professional Development Requirements
Thirty-six (36) professional development hours are the minimum requirement (limit of six hours per day) per year from June 1, 2015 to May 31, 2016.
Minimum Annual Requirements:
● 18 hours directly related to the educator’s Professional Growth Plan (PGP).
● Teachers and administrators will receive training for TESS/Leads and Bloomboard as required. (1 hour TESS update for 2015-2016.)
● Each year, administrator training in data disaggregation, instructional strategies, & fiscal management training.
● Each year, 2 hours Tier I training for bookkeepers and superintendents (12 hours initial, 2 hours annually thereafter).
● Each year, 2 hours Tier II training for principals.
● Up to 12 hours for teachers planning and preparation at school as applicable (Act 969 of 2013)
● Crisis training including crisis drills, emergency plans, and active assailant drills as applicable.
● Training for Advanced Placement (up to 30 hours), if applicable.
● A 3 hour college course = 15 hours (up to 30) if applicable.
Scheduled Professional Development:
● Once every 4 years licensed personnel will receive 2 hours training in teen suicide awareness and prevention. (Act 969 of 2013) (Scheduled for 2015-16)
● Every 4th year, 2 hours training in Arkansas History will be provided for those who provide instruction in Arkansas history. (Act 969 of 2013) (Scheduled for 2016-17)
● Every 4th year, 2 hours training in child maltreatment will be provided for mandatory reporters and licensed elementary and secondary public school personnel (Act 969 of 2013) (Required 2017-2018)
● Every 4th year, 2 hours training in parental involvement for teachers and administrators.
(Act 969 of 2013) (Scheduled for 2018-19)
● Once every 3 years athletic coaches will receive training for the health and safety of students in public school athletic activities.
● Once every 2 years, training for all Nettleton School personnel in sexual harassment. (Recommended 2016-2017)
Approved professional development activities may include conferences, workshops, institutes, individual learning, mentoring, peer coaching, study groups, National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Certification, distance learning, internships, school programs, and approved college/university coursework. Professional development activities should be consistent with the objectives developed by the National Staff Development Council Standards.
Professional development activities shall relate to the following areas: content (K-12); instructional strategies; assessment; advocacy/leadership; systemic change process; standards, frameworks, and curriculum alignment; supervision; mentoring/coaching; educational technology; principles of learning/developmental stages; cognitive research; parent involvement; building a collaborative learning community; and student health and wellness.
Staff Development Focus Areas
1. Content (K-12)-means increasing knowledge in a discipline or domain. Anything you
attend related directly to what you teach.
2. Instructional Strategies-means techniques increasing knowledge in a discipline or
domain. CGI, PBIS, Cooperative Learning, etc.
3. Assessment--means measuring and judging students performance and achievement
relative to the learning standards. Most TLI trainings, Benchmark
4. Advocacy/Leadership--means building the capacity for shared vision and system
improvement in order to improve student learning. ACSIP, Indistar, BLT meetings, AdvancEd
5. Systematic Change Process--means understanding changes across an entire system
such as culture, governance, community, roles, rules, responsibility, etc. to improve the

6. Standards, Frameworks and Curriculum Alignment--means defining what students
should know and be able to do at acceptable performance levels and organizing
curriculum and instruction to bring desired learning results. Aligning the curriculum, TLI

to improve the quality of staff members and performance.
8. Mentoring/Coaching-means increasing capacity for coaching and mentoring others
to assist in growth of instructional skills and effectiveness of colleagues. Mentoring,

9. Educational Technology-means the use of any technology to enhance instruction,

10. Principles of Learning/Development Stages means understanding and applying
knowledge about how humans learn from birth through adulthood in order to maximize
achievement.
11. Cognitive Research means research about learning and application to practice.
12. Building a Collaborative Learning Community means understanding community,
sensitivity, diversity, and effective communication of high expectations. Anti-bullying,

13. Parent Involvement means professional development designed to enhance
understanding of effective parental involvement strategies.
14. Arkansas History includes prehistory, physical characteristics and the culture of
Arkansas, including the significant contributions and achievements of its populations.
15. Administrator Skills specifically includes training in data disaggregation, instructional
leadership and fiscal managements.
