Job Purpose:
Providing advice and guidance to the Estates & Facilities Catering Services and all the operations of the Southampton University Students Union (SUSU) in reducing Occupational and public H&S risks through meeting legislative requirements and the University H&S Management System.
Develop and implement specific areas of H&S policy for the University, especially food hygiene and all H & S Policy for SUSU Operations.
Technical Support/Advice
1.  Organise and lead in appropriate safety committees and promote Health and Safety Policies and procedures.
2.  Provide Health and Safety Advice to Catering Service Managers, Catering Facility Staff, and Students’ Union Staff, Service Users and Students as appropriate.
3.  Assist Estates & Facilities and SUSU management in the monitoring of H&S performance and progress against the H&S improvement plans and in the preparation of the resulting Service quarterly reports,
4.  Plan and deliver Health and Safety and other associated training as required.
5.  Provide advice to Students’ Union Event organisers (both external and internal)and Catering Facility Managers on the preparation of risk assessments based on the guidance supplied by the Central Health and Safety Group, and monitor the adequacy of RA’s carried out.
6.  Co-ordinate and conduct inspections and management system audits of H & S management arrangements as set out by the University and Union Health and Safety Management Systems
7.  Assist managers in conducting investigations of accidents and incidents reported to them in Estates and Facilities Catering Operations and SUSU, identifying root causes and reporting them to the appropriate management board and the Central Health and Safety Group.
8.  To seek the advice of the Central Health and Safety Group, on Health and Safety issues outside the scope of the post holders technical expertise.
Co-ordination of Health and Safety Activities
9.  Maintain and develop the necessary records for Health and Safety as set out in the University and Union’s Health and Safety Management System for SUSU and catering operations.
10.  Maintain an effective two way communication process between the Central Health and Safety Group in relation to standards, guidance and needs.
11.  Promote and maintain a two way consultation process with SUSU and Catering Facilities staff on relevant health and Safety issues
12.  Administer the delivery of Health and Safety related training across SUSU and Catering Facilities Service, assisting mangers in identifying individual and group training needs and directing them to the appropriate training.
13.  Co-ordinate the timetabling of electrical testing of portable appliances, and the certification and calibration of safety critical equipment.
14.  Maintain a comprehensive register of risk assessments for SUSU and Estates and Facilities Catering Operations, ensuring that risk assessments are reviewed and updated as required by the management system.
15.  Provide guidance to SUSU and Catering Operation managers on the implementation of the University and Union Health and Safety Management System, standards and guidance provided by the Central Health and Safety Group.

1.  1. Will communicate both verbally with, and in writing to, all other members of the Service including staff and users of SUSU Facilities. Good communication and working relationships must be maintained as a large majority of tasks require teamwork. Reports on the status of tasks, incidents and new information obtained will be shared with all members of the management team.

7.  This role plays a key role in assisting the Central Health & Safety Group, the Estates and Facilities and SUSU to ensure that they comply with legal requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and associated safety legislation and will lead in monitoring food hygiene arrangements both for the University and SUSU. The role is an important part of fulfilling both organisations obligations under the Act and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations to appoint a competent person and provide adequate resources to ensure that proper arrangements are in place for the control of risks arising out of the universities operation.
The post also contributes to the overall effectiveness of the Students’ Union by;
