ASSISTANCE FOR NC SCHOOL ARTS PROGRAMS AFFECTED BY TORNADOES

On April 16, 2011, over sixty tornadoes ravaged at least twenty counties in North Carolina, killing twenty-four and injuring more than 130 citizens. Countless homes, schools, and businesses were damaged or destroyed. If you are an arts educator who has suffered loss of materials and would like to request assistance, or, if you have items that you would like to donate to those in need through the Arts Education Exchange, please describe these materials as specifically as possible and provide contact information for how you may be reached (name, email, phone number). Send your description of materials to donate or request for donations to: or . SPRING CONCERT DEDICATED TO STUDENTS OF GREENE COUNTY

Greene Central Middle School was one of the schools destroyed during the April 16, 2011 tornadoes. Music teacher Skip Morris and his students from Eastern Wayne Middle School are dedicating their spring concert on May 10th to the students of Greene County. The audience will be asked to make a financial donation to the music department of Greene Central Middle School with the hope that it will help them to rebuild the music program.

We want to celebrate the many successes occurring in arts education in North Carolina! If you have a “good news” item that you feel is appropriate to share with stakeholders throughout the state, please email the item to or . Submissions should be focused on arts education accomplishments (examples would include teacher of the year designation – system or regional; innovative programs; regional, state or national recognition, awards, honors; etc) and should be limited to 100 words or less. The Arts Education consultants have the editorial right to screen and/or edit items before publication.

“CHARLOTTE’S GOT A LOT”: CHARLOTTE MECKLENBURG SCHOOLS K-12 STUDENT ART EXHIBITION

CMS Arts Education Department has been invited to curate a K-12 student art exhibit at the U.S. Department of Education in Washington, D.C. due to its reputation for “conducting a strong, quality program.” The opening ceremony will be on May 2, 2011, and will be attended by legislators, national education personnel, and local arts supporters. Rachel Goslin, Executive Director of the President’s Commission on the Arts and Humanities; Mel Watts, NC Congressman; and Ann Clark, Chief Academic Officer will be the keynote speakers.

SCHOLASTIC NCAEA 2011 AWARD WINNERS

Congratulations to Sabrina Buchannan from Eugene Ashley High School and Heidy Perez from Hendersonville Middle School for being selected as Scholastic NCAEA 2011 Award Winners. Sabrina’s ink and colored pencil “Selling the Shrimps” was chosen for the Eastern-Central Region, and Heidy’s ceramic piece “Facing Love” was chosen for the Western North Carolina region.
