Over view of the High School and Beyond Plan- a universal platform for working with youth

Danise Ackelson from OSPI gave a presentation on the High School and Beyond Plan.

This is really helpful for students who don’t necessarily have an idea of what they want to do after high school. The local districts establish what is in the plan. Each student has an opportunity to select the courses that align with their goals. The plan is meant to start in middle school and be reviewed and updated yearly. With a yearly review the school is trying to catch the kids who aren’t on track. This is a Graduation Requirement in our state.

Efforts should be made to involve parents/ guardians in the process as well. Schools do try to encourage parent involvement.

Question: Who reviews the plan with the student?

An ideal system would have an advisor to review their plan. There should be lessons and activities. Sometimes it’s a career center that does 30 students at a time. Sometimes it’s the school counselor to review each plan. There is no standard because each district is responsible for implementing.

Begin the process of gathering documents, resources, and trainings for the Toolkit

Do some work around one of these 3 buckets

  • Training (What are the basic levels of knowledge for spotting who needs help?)
  • Tools you could use now for free or withminimal cost
  • Literature section to the tool kit

Brainstorm and encourage 4-5 things to the next meeting.

There needs to be a better professional development so that people who work with youth know how to connect them.

Navigators need to be able to tailor something to each individual student. You need to know their strengths, etc.

Resources:

Career Guidance Washington online resource

  • 30 lessons for grades 6-12
  • Templates for doing the Plan
  • Program development resources
  • Available to all high schools
  • It provides a digital HSBP that can be used after high school
  • HSBP can track courses, interests, extracurricular, etc

1/3 of the school districts in the state use the digital platform. It could be pushed out more and used as a data collection tool.
