BGT Καὶ ὄντος αὐτοῦ ἐν Βηθανίᾳ ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ Σίμωνος τοῦ λεπροῦ, κατακειμένου αὐτοῦ ἦλθεν γυνὴ ἔχουσα ἀλάβαστρον μύρου νάρδου πιστικῆς πολυτελοῦς, συντρίψασα τὴν ἀλάβαστρον κατέχεεν αὐτοῦ τῆς κεφαλῆς.

NAU While He was in Bethany at the home of Simon the leper, and reclining at the table, there came a woman with an alabaster vial of very costly perfume of pure nard; and she broke the vial and poured it over His head.

KJV And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head.

DRA And when he was in Bethania, in the house of Simon the leper, and was at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of precious spikenard: and breaking the alabaster box, she poured it out upon his head.

NIV While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of a man known as Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.

NJB He was at Bethany in the house of Simon, a man who had suffered from a virulent skin-disease; he was at table when a woman came in with an alabaster jar of very costly ointment, pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the ointment on his head.

NLT Meanwhile, Jesus was in Bethany at the home of Simon, a man who had previously had leprosy. While he was eating, a woman came in with a beautiful alabaster jar of expensive perfume made from essence of nard. She broke open the jar and poured the perfume over his head.

MSG Jesus was at Bethany, a guest of Simon the Leper. While he was eating dinner, a woman came up carrying a bottle of very expensive perfume. Opening the bottle, she poured it on his head.

BGT ἦσαν δέ τινες ἀγανακτοῦντες πρὸς ἑαυτούς· εἰς τί ἡ ἀπώλεια αὕτη τοῦ μύρου γέγονεν;

NAU But some were indignantly remarking to one another, "Why has this perfume been wasted?

KJV And there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said, Why was this waste of the ointment made?

DRA Now there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said: Why was this waste of the ointment made?

NRS But some were there who said to one another in anger, "Why was the ointment wasted in this way?

BGT ἠδύνατο γὰρ τοῦτο τὸ μύρον πραθῆναι ἐπάνω δηναρίων τριακοσίων καὶ δοθῆναι τοῖς πτωχοῖς· καὶ ἐνεβριμῶντο αὐτῇ.

NAU "For this perfume might have been sold for over three hundred denarii, and the money given to the poor." And they were scolding her.

KJV For it might have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and have been given to the poor. And they murmured against her.

DRA For this ointment might have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and given to the poor. And they murmured against her.

NRS For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii, and the money given to the poor." And they scolded her.

BGT ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν· ἄφετε αὐτήν· τί αὐτῇ κόπους παρέχετε; καλὸν ἔργον ἠργάσατο ἐν ἐμοί.

NAU But Jesus said, "Let her alone; why do you bother her? She has done a good deed to Me.

KJV And Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on me.

DRA But Jesus said: Let her alone, why do you molest her? She hath wrought a good work upon me.

NRS But Jesus said, "Let her alone; why do you trouble her? She has performed a good service for me.

NET But Jesus said, "Leave her alone. Why are you bothering her? She has done a good service for me.

NIV "Leave her alone," said Jesus. "Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.

NJB But Jesus said, 'Leave her alone. Why are you upsetting her? What she has done for me is a good work.

NLT But Jesus replied, "Leave her alone. Why criticize her for doing such a good thing to me?

MSG But Jesus said, "Let her alone. Why are you giving her a hard time? She has just done something wonderfully significant for me.

  • ἄφετε - Is Jesus saying they should leave her alone or forgive her for what she did?
  • κόπους παρέχετε– The MSG is actually quite a good translation here.
  • ἔργον – Does Mark use this term with the same sense as John, Paul or James?

BGT πάντοτε γὰρ τοὺς πτωχοὺς ἔχετε μεθ᾽ ἑαυτῶν καὶ ὅταν θέλητε δύνασθε αὐτοῖς εὖ ποιῆσαι, ἐμὲ δὲ οὐ πάντοτε ἔχετε.

NAU "For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you wish you can do good to them; but you do not always have Me.

KJV For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always.

DRA For the poor you have always with you: and whensoever you will, you may do them good: but me you have not always.

NAU "She has done what she could; she has anointed My body beforehand for the burial.

BGT ἀμὴν δὲ λέγω ὑμῖν, ὅπου ἐὰν κηρυχθῇ τὸ εὐαγγέλιον εἰς ὅλον τὸν κόσμον, καὶ ὃ ἐποίησεν αὕτη λαληθήσεται εἰς μνημόσυνον αὐτῆς.

NAU "Truly I say to you, wherever the gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of in memory of her."

KJV Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.

DRA Amen, I say to you, wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, that also which she hath done, shall be told for a memorial of her.

NRS Truly I tell you, wherever the good news is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in remembrance of her."

One of the Pharisees asked Jesusto eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee's house and took his place at the table. 37 And a woman in the city, who was a sinner, having learned that he was eating in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster jar of ointment. 38 She stood behind him at his feet, weeping, and began to bathe his feet with her tears and to dry them with her hair. Then she continued kissing his feet and anointing them with the ointment. 39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw it, he said to himself, "If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what kind of woman this is who is touching him -- that she is a sinner." 40 Jesus spoke up and said to him, "Simon, I have something to say to you." "Teacher," he replied, "Speak." 41 "A certain creditor had two debtors; one owed five hundred denarii,and the other fifty. 42 When they could not pay, he canceled the debts for both of them. Now which of them will love him more?" 43 Simon answered, "I suppose the one for whom he canceled the greater debt." And Jesus said to him, "You have judged rightly." 44 Then turning toward the woman, he said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has bathed my feet with her tears and dried them with her hair. 45 You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not stopped kissing my feet. 46 You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. 47 Therefore, I tell you, her sins, which were many, have been forgiven; hence she has shown great love. But the one to whom little is forgiven, loves little." 48 Then he said to her, "Your sins are forgiven." / JOHN 12
Six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany, the home of Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 2 There they gave a dinner for him. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those at the table with him. 3 Mary took a pound of costly perfume made of pure nard, anointed Jesus' feet, and wiped them with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4 But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (the one who was about to betray him), said, 5 "Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?" 6 (He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; he kept the common purse and used to steal what was put into it.) 7 Jesus said, "Leave her alone. She bought itso that she might keep it for the day of my burial. 8 You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me."
